I have a Hobart 135 that I like a lot.
Didn't get shielding gas for it because I was building the shop.
Outdoors you almost have to use cored wire because the shielding
gas blows away easily.

To all those who responded on the welder issue...thanks a lot. I've looked
at all the 135 welders on the internet built by Hobart, Lincoln, and
Miller....it's going to be the Hobart 135 with the gas set-up. It seems to
be the most welder for the money and more than adequate for what I
need...especially since 220 is not availabe in my hangar. Thanks again.

Jim B,
When you get your MIG ask your dealer for the wire that is more
compatible to 4130 steel . MIG has never been recommended for aircraft 4130
but lately my research shows that all of the major manufactures of kit
planes and certified planes use MIG . I talked to the welder of RANS
AIRCRAFT last week and he told me that they have been using MIG for 17 years
and have done all the testing to prove it's strength . I,m not sold yet
...........I like my oxy-act .

Jim, the little 120 V welder will prove to be extremely useful for
tacking. I have the Miller 135 and I use it all the time. It will
make good welds on 1/16 or thinner material. On thicker stuff the
welds will be superficial and not to be trusted. Tacking with the MIG
and finishing with the torch like Jim does, is a very good way to build
a TW. Jerry

Jim, what do you use on the aft side of the firewall
as a heat barrier? I'm considering upholstry fabric or
carpet attached to fiberboard, but thought there
should be something better. RJ

After installing my new carbon fiber panel last summer
I decided to upgrade my Garmin 92 (now obsolete,) to a
color Garmin 295. I hate wires running around inside
the cockpit, so I mounted my new Garmin in the panel.
A small carbon shelf bonded behind the panel supports
the 1.5 lb handheld GPS. The quick release mount is
attached to an aluminum plate that also mounts a
cigarette lighter recepticle for power. The remote
antenna will mount to the main spar carry thru or sit
on top of the glare shield. The GPS and mount are
removable in under 2 minutes.

I use 1/2" foil backed rigid house insulation, held in place with aluminum
tape. Fasten it between the tubes on the front of the fuselage. Jim C

I just picked up an old paper cutter at the local grade school like the ones we
use as kids . The schools have outlawed them for a safety hazard because of the
exposed blade . It works fantastic for cutting aluminum ..032 and smaller for
all the trim and inspection covers on our airplanes .. I'm sure if you go to
your local school and talk to the custodian he could dig up a few !

I'm like you Earl...I like Oxy/Acet. Not only do I enjoy welding with gas,
it is the very best (psychological) stress reliever I've found. Jim
