I'm really looking forward to seeing your panel
installion. My carbon panel fits my Tailwind perfectly
and seams to damped some of the vibration especially
when I start the engine and shut down.

LOS ANGELES - The son of retired airline pilot William Zesiger, killed when his
experimental plane crashed in the ocean off San Pedro, said his father died doing
what he loved.
"He kept flying airplanes - that's all he ever did. That was his passion," son
Michael Zesiger, 45, said Sunday, a day after the death of his father.
Zesiger, 74, of Palos Verdes Estates began flying with the Air Force 54 years ago,
and he was a pilot for Trans World Airlines for 34 years before retiring about
15 years ago, his son said. The elder Zesiger died a short time after taking
off Saturday from Compton Airport.
Federal investigators were trying to determine the cause of the crash, but Michael
Zesiger said he believed a mechanical problem was likely to blame for the
crash of the single-engine, two-seat aircraft.
"I lost my best friend,' he said. "He loved doing what he loved best."

Jim C., it looks to me that the boot cowl, or cowl boot, on your plane is fastened
with removable fasteners.
Is this advantageous, or could they just as well be rivetted?

Bill,
As for ground handling, when I flew 774HB I thought it handled almost
exactly like a Citabria or maybe even a little easier. ONE THING TO
NOTE--If the main gear is not set properly it will make any tailwheel a
BEAR on the ground. You should NEVER have any toe-in but should be 0 in
the 3-point attitude. I have fixed several aircraft that had ground
handling problems from a Fleet to Pitts Special simply by aligning the
gear. The round rod gear-which I have put on 3 Pitts S-1s-makes landings
a piece of cake at almost any speed. I will attempt to explain
When you land (or at least when I land) I rarely get equal load on both
mains at the exact same time. If you have any toe out the tire with the
most weight (read traction) tends to take over. So for example you touch
down with more weight on the LH main it is toed in it wants to take the
plane right applying more weight (traction) to that tire making it want
to go more to the right (really the WRONG way) which makes it worse.
What we do of course is add left rudder to stop the RH turn and we
transfer the weight to the right main which if toed in wants to go left.
There tends to be this back and forth thing going on to greater or lesser
degree until we get it slowed down and weight equalized.
If the gear is toed out, when you land with more weight on the LH main it
wants to go left. This automatically transfers weight to the RH main
which wants to go right transferring weight to the left--Self
stabilizing. Of course you don't want much toe out because that can
cause other problems ie. Hard to push on the ground, tire wear etc. I
always shoot for 0 but never toe-in and that generally works good.
Something interesting happens with the round rod gear though. As you
land the tires want to go aft (drag) and since the tire is outboard of
the centerline of the round rod gear will twist some thus adding some
toe-out-Built in stability. Whittman was a smart man!! And Sorrells too
for using it!!!!!!

Question for Jim C.
Two weeks ago in the photos of the baggage compartment it appears the
framework is aluminum angle. Could you describe in some detail how this will
be finished out? What size of angle, what you are using for the sides and
floor? Is the framework riveted or welded together? Any additional
information will be greatly appreciated.

I bend up aluminum angle from .050 sheet but you can use 1" store bought hardware
store type angle. Tabs are welded onto the fuselage and the angle is pop riveted
on. It is finished off with 1/4" poly board, [looks like corrugated cardboard],
then covered with automotive foam backed headliner material. Luan plywood
from the lumber yard works for the baggage floor, make it in two pieces with
a stiffener at the joint. Places that sell plastic products and some sign shops
carry poly board, it's about $10.00 for a 4x8' sheet. Jim C

I thought it was mandatory that you fixed brakes by scrunching up under the panel
with your back leg hanging out the door at an angle.

It sure makes fixing a brake or some other problem that went wrong by the firewall

Is this advantageous, or could they just as well be rivetted?
