What do you guys think of an annual Tailwind Builder Assistance Program, A week
long intense program with expert instructors like Jim Clement, Rick Crosslin,
Earl Luce and other's to be held the 7 days before Baraboo, near or at Baraboo.
The price of the program would include all needed materials like tubing,
spars, wood, epoxy, tools with jigs (fuselage, door, seat, rib, wing, tail feathers,
control parts). Options could be pre-made parts like doors, landing gear
with engine mount, hidden hinges, aluminum flaps and ailerons, pre-tacked fuselage
sides, ribs, seats, pre-bent or made brackets. Price would be based on
what services and materials you needed and would have to be paid in advance for
planning and so material suppliers could be paid in advance.
This is just a rough thought brought on buy Lancair and others builder programs
that help you do a year worth of work in just a week. This would have to be
sponsored by someone that had a large empty hangar or access to one. What do
you think?

A while back, I discussed this with Jim to see if he would be
interested in letting me write a book about his Tailwinds.
My thought was something like Bingelis in style, but using the
Tailwind(s) as a project airplane.
Something EAA might want to sell?
It could have a much broader appeal than just the Tailwind
community as a lot of what is involved in building any airplane
is fairly common stuff.
Start off with the history of Steve Wittman and the Tailwind.
Some prime examples of the art?
Bios on some of the people and planes.
I'd nominate JC, RC, Earl, Fred, and Jerry as some of the major
players. Need several others too.
(this obviously has to be slick full color glamor shots
(Of the AirPlanes!).
The Cafe report.(!)
Construction Section:
Jim pretty well covers airframe to wingtips with his photo packages.
What is the photo about? Why is it that way?
How does it relate to the rest of the structure?
Potential problems and how to avoid them?
Especially those areas not covered well in the plans.
Wiring, electrical issues, electronics.
Engines and props and spinners - oh my!
Alternative engines? Olds, Mazda, dare I say Corvair?
Fuel System
Control System
Landing Gear, wheel pants, brakes
Seats, windows,
Mods, Major and minor...
Wood wing tips
Tricycle gear
Door and cabin mods
Trim systems

This sounds like a winner of an idea to me. I have the Bingellis books
but Tailwind specific would be so much better. I'm going so slow that
recording the expertise should be recorded or I'll fiorget it before I
get to that part!.

Last evening I put the 1.4oz glass cloth on the top of 1 wing panel.
This morning I put 1 more cote of resin on it and tonight I put the 3rd
cote on. I think it came out real nice. 1st cote used 7oz to adhere the
cloth. 2nd cote used 2oz and cote 1 used about 1.5oz. Dave Conrad
