Jerry, Wasn't 4140 what was called for on the Cassutt gear? The change will be to 4340. When he runs out of raw material, that will be it. A switch to 4140 steel will probably take place. How about 4340 steel which is available from ACS? I made up a tailwheel spring to Steve's specification of hardness and it performs well. This is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy with deeper hardenability than the 4140 series. It is usually refered to as a spring steel material and has 110,000 psi tensile strength in the annealed condition. Any other experience with this particular steel? Jim, I don't remember about the Cassutt gear. Harmon definitely told me the switch would be to 4340 for the Tailwind gear. Main thing is that there is a suitable substitute available. I think Harmon has a few sets of 6150s in stock I have three sets that I am holding to go with engine mount orders. It was 10 degrees lasts night and the wind will get your attention. I flew two hours in January, two in Feb and once this month so far for about 20 minutes. Got my fingers crossed for April. I hope to fly up to Baraboo soon if the weather gods will ever forgive m for taking them so lightly. I just checked my Cassutt plans. They call out 9260 mill rolled spring stock heat treated to Brinnel 40-42 after fabrication. I don't know what Ib is selling for the aluminum gear. By the way, if anyone has a need for steel main gear and aluminum axles for a Cassutt, let me know. Jerry, Let me know when and if you are going to build the motor mount for the tri gear 0-320 and if so will you include the gear legs or not also about how much it will cost. Hope I'm not asking too much at one time. Any response will be appreciated. Thanks Alex
