Thanks for the info Dave. Is the % rate similar or the same as prop tax on a
house ( just gives me an idea how much they will get me for) Who accesses
the AC value? Me or a county accessor? How does the county even know you are
in their county if you sublease from another guy and are not on the lease
agreement?

Subject: Tailwind-List: FW: cal use tax
I am trying to find out if I owe use tax on my Tailwind.
Can any of the Cal tailwind boys tell me if I owe use tax if I purchased all
the materials in Cal and paid sales tax at that time.
If I do owe when is it payable, as soon as I register the ac or when I get
FAA certification papers, or 12 months after that.
I know they will get me somewhere. Just don't want to get some enormous bill
in the yrs to come.

Graham:
They will only ask you for property taxes after you register. The county
in which
you normally keep the aircraft is entitled to those taxes (which will be
assessed each year), not necessarily the address to which it is registered.
I
keep my plane in Yolo County to which I pay the annual property tax on it.
Sacramento
county (where I live) has asked me every time I register a plane for
property taxes, but I explain the plane is not kept in Sacramento County,
and
that ends the matter.
I was never asked to come up with sales tax on the plane I built. But if
you do,
you explain it just like you did--you only have to pay sales tax once. Now
if you buy a plane, that is where they will have you for sales or use tax.
A
use tax is just a sales tax applied on goods brought into the state and used
here, as opposed to purchased in the state where sales tax would otherwise
be
applicable. But you are only taken to the sales/use tax alter once.

Graham.... Do the best you can at providing the "value" of your plane to
the accessor ONLY when they send you a letter. Also, remember "It's just a
homemade airplane".... Tailwinds don't show up on those sheets of paper
like Citations and Lears do..
When you register your plane, sometimes the Feds provide your address info
to the county but they are usually a year or so behind. If you stay somewhat
stealth, you might be able to slide for a loooooonnnng time. :)

Yes I believe the rate is the same for land, usually a little over 1% of
value. You will be required to prove value, either by declaration, or by
bill of sale, or some means. For a homebuilt that you build they will
likely take your declaration of value unless it is way low. The county will
send out a request for that information. Counties go around and look at
planes tied down or hangared at their airports. Yolo County does an annual
inspection, and they take down N nos. just for that purpose. It means
revenue to them.

Just pulled the motor mount/landing gear mount out of the boxes that arrived today.
Really nice workmanship. From the looks of it, I have the feeling that a LOT of
hours have been saved getting this from Jerry.
I would highly reccomend you get the mount assembly from Jerry if you haven't faced
your motor mount/landing gear mount situation.
Getting something like this from a guy has the fixture all set up is WONDERFUL!

Hello from (almost ,right Paul) Northern Michigan. I finished the covering,
proper, this morning and i'm putting on the poly-brush. Was hoping to get
the fuselage painted this week so I could put the wheels on and mount the
engine. Must get with Paul about the panel. Hoping to mold a cowl in the
next two week, but sometimes a week = a 100 days. I should have looked at
Jim's floor, as he said he got it in, in two pieces'. I'm not telling how
many I had, as there was more sawdust than plywood before I got the darn
