Jerry, I believe my plans called for 3/8 x 0.028. This was on the revised
plans and there were other errors in tubing size. I suspect that this is
correct though since the longer tubes connecting the flap horns to the
actuating bellcrank are also 0.028

Subject: | Wittman party report |
Tailwind at Yahoo <TailwindForum@yahoogroups.com>
Several of the Tailwinders were in attendance at the 100th Birthday
party. Total attendance was probably about 100 people. The program was
very nicely done and was streamed over the net as it took place. I
recall them saying that if you have a fast modem it would be available
from the EAA web site later this week. Ask EAA for more info. The focus
of the event was Steve's life, stories were shared and old video clips
were played. Pictures were hard to take as the event was held in the
eagle hangar and it was somewhat dark. I walked away with only a few
pics non of witch had much content. I got in to late for the Wittman
hangar tour, Clement and Danner I know were in on that. I'm sure they
will also post. Paul gave a nice speech and I snapped a shot of him and
have posted that below. Dave Conrad

Subject: | Re: [TailwindForum] Looking to buy a Tailwind |
Jerry, James;
James is right!!!
Here is my prev post on TW with 112 gallon tank;
This is better, i just copied and pasted it here
The attached word doc was provided to me by Jim Stanton at the Frasca flyin Oct
11th.
This TW spent the time reported in Southwest suburbs of Chicago and a flying
friend of 50 years just bought Chucks old home on Naper Aero private strip.
Part 2 when i get time to scan and clean it up.
Let me know if you guys can open and read it.

Did you ever get the urge to try something? I did! I figured that it' would be
a good idea to stuff my
Wittman "Tailwind" full of tanks and go non-stop coast to coast!
Measuring up the available cubic feet of space for tanks, and considering the
cruise speed and gas consumption, it looked close. When I mentioned it to him,
Steve Wittman kind of grinned and concurred that it would be a good trick.
So I went down to B. & F. Aircraft & Supply and bought a batch of soft sheet
aluminum, filler necks, etc.,
and proceeded to bend up tanks on the ping pong table in my basement. With the
normal fuel capacity of 30 gals., it figured cubic inch-wise to be 112 gals.
total. Mathematically then, I could go Los Angeles-New York non- stop if I had
a 20 knot assist from the wind.
I clamped a one gallon oil can on top of the instrument panel, complete with
sight gauge and associated pump and valves, generously assembled by local Flying
Farmer Boyd Clow.
Steve Wittman helped to install the tanks and fine- tune my engine. This was
in the spring of 1965. He also located three certified scales to weigh the whole
issue, including my broad derriere, as required by the National Aeronautics
Association. It all weighed 1, 760 lbs., some 460.lbs. over the design gross
weight. We had 40 gals. in the baggage compartment, which was designed for 60
lbs. of baggage, and loaded it 10 gals. at a time, making a take-off and landing
after each addition to check the CG. It flew hands-off with three notches of
flap.
The FAA required me to demonstrate it at gross load for controllability, and
it did just fine. I want to thank Jack Mathieson of the FAA for his timely hints
and fatherly advice. He's an old duster pilot and is familiar with peculiar
CG conditions. I know doggone well, when some of those F AA inspectors saw the
gear squat, that they didn't think it would go.
Well, the morning came to do it, and with official timer Steve Wittman ready
on this end, and newspaper articles all written, off we went. Two hours and forty-five

James, are you sure you are looking for a Tailwind? Tip tanks are not an option.
So far the most fuel I have heard of carried in the wing is 18 gal on each
side. Most Tailwind's carry between thirty and forty gallons in the fuselage,
none in the wing. If you carried 100 gallons you would not get off the ground.

Hi all,
I am looking to buy a Tailwind.
I am 6'2 so I need some room.
I would also like one set up with mode-c, have all landing, markers, and strobe
lights.
I hope to find one with 100 gal wing tip mods I've heard about.
I am looking for something that looks good and has a good motor, just like
everyone else.
I currently own a Stinson 108-1.
I have located a couple of fine machines but would like to see what else is
out there.

Subject: | Aluminum ailerons and flaps |
I just finished the first aileron and flap ass'y (except for some cleanup
work)
It is very stiff. I can still pull out the aileron torque tube and sand it
down some. But some of the hinges seem a little tight too. On a couple
occasions during assembly I had to take off a hinge and clean it out because
it had started to gall. Now I have the skins riveted on.
They move fine until they start catching...then it just gets worse and
worse.
Should I really make them sloppy? These are parts I would like to avoid
making again. (it seems to be the trend for me)
Also, there are a few waves in the flap that will oilcan if you play with
them. I'll attach a photo.
The big lightspot on the flap is tape residue.

Rich,
i had the same problem with mine after 38 years the inner bearing got stiff,
i made an 8'-0 long reamer and that made them move in the wind. You could
use it if you want.

Rich, put a little oil on the hinges. The center bearing in the flap should
have a sloppy fit so it doesn't bind up. Jim C

But something to keep in mind before building them?
Aluminum / aluminum will gall.
Aluminum / steel won't.

You could try some moly-disulfide assembly lube.
