However, yesterday someone showed me how to put a ball on the end of a 2% Thoriated tungsten. Once that is accomplished, welding aluminum is about the same with either tungsten. I ran about a mile of practice welds, using both, and could not tell any difference. First, sharpen the 2% tungsten to a sharp pencil point. Then, with the welder set to DC + and high freq to "Start," hold the tungsten vertical over a grounded, clean steel surface, start the arc and watch as the ball forms. Use low amperage to slow the process down to a controllable rate. The ball can be smaller or the same size as the tungsten. Then switch the welder to AC; high freq to "Continuous" and you are ready to weld aluminum. I bet a lot of you already knew this, but it was news to me.
