<sniped>
Thanks Mike.
I'm going to try to Cross Post this (if it works)
Netiquite?
Picture files can be quite large.
Phone lines can be quite slow.
Mixing the two?
An image that takes 10 seconds to upload on Road Runner will
take at least 10 _minutes_ to download via modem. !
(RR is 60 time faster than dial up?)
So, some things to think about before clicking the send button?
Resolution:
(X,Y) in dots (or pixels - short for PICture ELements)
X times Y is the number of pixels in the image.
640x480 is about minimum photo file size.
Cameras and scanners go a lot higher than that.
File size (the collection of dots that make up the picture)
increases as a square function of resolution.
Remember? Doubling dimensions squares the area (and cubes the volume)?
That's true for picture files too.
Pixels:
A picture is made of pixels. PICture ELements.
Basically, a pixel is the smallest addressable dot of light on the
screen.
A pixel has "color depth".
1 bit = the light is on or off
A single bit pixel can only be on or off, fine for stark black and
white (or green, or amber?) for a text display, put hardly photo
quality.
4 bits is a "nibble" (or "nybble for purest).
4 bit pixels can show any of 16 colors (2
4) (2 because it's binary)
8 bits is a "byte".
8 bits give 256 colors. (2
8)
This was the old DOS "photo" quality display.
640 x 480 x 256 colors is indeed a photo quality screen display.
Each pixel has one byte of memory for color.
16 bits (2 bytes) is a machine "word".
16 bit is called High Color in the Windows world.
65,536 colors (2
16)
Each pixel takes 2 bytes of memory for color.
32 bits (2 words, or 4 bytes) is a "double word".
This is the Windows True Color setting.
Each pixel takes 4 bytes of memory for color.
Million some odd colors?
(But physiologists say the human eye an only differentiate about
500 or so SHADES OF COLOR. I've always wondered about that??)
So...
Each dot of the image takes a given amount of memory for color
information. The higher settings take more memory space per dot.
Simple enough.
DPI:
Dots per Inch - settings on printers, cameras and scanners, etc.
600 dots per inch is a very high resolution setting.
600 pixels (times whatever color depth) - per inch of original image.
(you do the math on an 8 x 10 glossy!)
72 dpi is pretty low res. Noticeably low res.
But the files are small.
200 seems about right as a compromise between image quality
and file size.
File Format:
There are many different file formats for picture files.
JPG has become the defacto web standard - strictly because the
files can be smaller. JPG is a compression technique that is LOSSY.
(Picture information is lost in the compression process)
How much is lost depends on the settings you select.
High fidelity settings make whopping big files because there is
little or no compression happening.
High compression settings means more loss of image fidelity but the
files are a lot smaller.
compromise?
JPG is a good photo image format, but it does not reproduce line
drawings very well. For line drawings the TIFF format works mo
betta, but with (you guessed it) larger file sizes.
Email verses Web
There are pros and cons to both sides.
Email:
Email is immediate and (fairly) private.
Send it, receive it. Easy.
But if someone misses it, the picture would have to be resent.
(privately, preferably, but often to the entire list)
Also, due to the differences in connect speeds, how long the
file takes to download can vary wildly.
Sometimes, the same picture gets sent 2 or 3 or 4 times?
Please! One per customer.
Somebody will complain.
Someone always does.
But it's a legitimate complaint.
There is no archive feature.
If an image is lost, we have to go back to the original source
and ask for another copy.
Web:
Web posting puts a copy of the picture where anyone can find it
if they want to see it.
Also - whenever.
We send only the address and the recipient can then access the file.
Web posting allows the end viewers to decide which pictures to
open (or not) depending on their interests and network connect speeds.
Web posting is quite public.
Web posting (especially Yahoo) might expose your email address
to undesirable elements of the net. (hey, it's a public forum)
Conclusion and Recommendations?:
One mega file, or a dozen smaller files?
File _size_ increases as a square function, big pictures
make for really big files. big in a hurry.
Big files take more space on the web, and take longer to transfer.
Unless there is a _valid reason_ for sending the highest resolution,
as the best compromise between size, transfer time, storage space, and
image quality, give the 640x40 JPG a try?
Thanks,
Richard

Bob , I think it is about the FAA retracting the sport pilot category again. Everyone
was expecting to have it passed in time for Sun-n-Fun, but it did not happen.
Administrator Marion Blakely withdrew it from the table to answer some
questions about the rulemaking package.
