"Tailwind list" <tailwind-list@matronics.com>
I visited Red Hamilton at Ft. Bragg, and we got to talking about noise levels in
the Tailwind. He has been taking readings in his new one, and adding some sound
deadening material. He loaned me his sound meter, and I took the following
readings in N168A (Clement trike) on the way back to Yolo County. Thought
the group might be interested.
Here are the results:
DB Taxi Runup Climb Cruise (2500) Slo Cruise
(2000)
Ear level 94 104 106 104-6
94
Windshield 93 105 108 109-114
95
Lap level 90 104 107 106
94
As you can see, the levels are fairly high, no matter where in the cabin it is
measured. I think the meter is set to average sound intensity over a short (1
sec or so) interval.

These figures compare favorably with what I got in N6PJ abour 20 years ago. For
fun see what the readings are with closed throttle in a dive to cruise speed.
Let us know what the readings are.

It would be interesting to know what the same meter would read in a
Cessna 172 or warrior. Dave Conrad

I've got some:
O320 W-10 with 8lbs of sound barrier and absorber; and upholstery
dB taxi climb 2500 cruise 2000cruise
Ear level 92 108 108 102
Windshield 93
Lap 87
I have since changed mufflers and gotten about 2 dB less in cruise. I want to try
the dive to 250 with closed throttle and see what that noise level is, as suggested.
that would tend to isolate wind noise from engine noise. For the record,
same meter, same w10, before any door seals or sound deadening, but with
upholstery, 117 at high cruise! say what?
Cessna 180, not generally thought of as a quiet a/c,1953 with O470U, Beech mufflers,
no sound deadening on firewall, standard windshield and side windows, same
categories, same meter
