Subject: | 4130 sheet and tubing |
--> Tailwind-List message posted by: Jerry Hey <j-winddesigns@thegrid.net>
I just talked to Charllie at Dillsburg concerting 4130 sheet. I now
call weekly for the latest update. According to Charlie (and I agree)
what we are seeing with 4130 is endemic of the entire steel supply.
Over the years, America's ability to manufacture our own steel has
steadily diminished to the point where we are now dependent of CHINA
for 4130. They can charge whatever they want and deliver according to
their own convenience.
Out sourcing of our ability to produce the products we need is a
disaster that threatens everything. Terrorists, who want to see the
end of our country, don't need to do a thing except wait. Our own
stupidity, greed and laziness will do the job for them. Jerry

Gordon,
I've been making various muffling devices, tubes with square ends, tubes with saw
cuts, tapered tubes with holes--I'm getting quite a family of them.
So far the least noisy, in the cockpit, is a tapered/flattened tube with 3/8" holes
down the bottom edge and an outlet slot of 1/4", it is 9 1/2" long and the
two weigh 1.7# with clamps.
I'll get some photos to the list someday.

No! I'm not mad at anybody.
It's the tailwheel leg of my parasol...
It certainly lost its temper. :
)
The first leg proved to be a little too springy (can you say Tigger?)
so I had a thicker one made. (1.5 T)
It's a flat leaf automotive spring - slightly reshaped for a tailwheel.
An hour or so running around on the ground bent the tailwheel up maybe
15 - 20 degrees!?!
So back to the Spring shop.
Turns out they just cold bent the flat stock and didn't reheat it.
(Their oven hasn't been fired in five years.)
So they made me two more just like the other one....
Best explination I got was that bending the tempered steel might
cause it to lose temper.
Is this just another one of those things I didn't know I didn't know?
Or what?
