Richard, You might consider making a tailspring from the carbon fibre leaf spring from a Chev. Astro van.they are very light and strong, also, the material is easily worked and cheap to come by at any auto scrap yard. I made the main gear for my Stits Flut-r-bug from this and after 200 hours have had no trouble. you can see some pics. at the end of the public pictures section of the RAA website. www.raa.ca John. It certainly lost its temper. : ) The first leg proved to be a little too springy (can you say Tigger?) so I had a thicker one made. (1.5 T) It's a flat leaf automotive spring - slightly reshaped for a tailwheel. An hour or so running around on the ground bent the tailwheel up maybe 15 - 20 degrees!?! So back to the Spring shop. Turns out they just cold bent the flat stock and didn't reheat it. (Their oven hasn't been fired in five years.) So they made me two more just like the other one.... Best explination I got was that bending the tempered steel might cause it to lose temper. Is this just another one of those things I didn't know I didn't know? Or what? I know that this included some subscription renewals. How do I know? As I was heading to town, I checked the mailbox and saw the contents. I decided to leave it there for the time being. When I got back from town, I opened the mail box and it was empty. Unfortunately, I did not note who the subscriptions were from. If you sent in your renewal since last Thursday, let me know. I will check to see if it arrived. Thanks, Jerry ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 06:48:11 PM PST US From: "john" Subject: Tailwind-List: Urbana --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "john" Rick; Are you going to breakout the O&O for Urbana. I'm looking at the calender and it is only a month away. I'm trying to get the paint on the W-10, but the humidity here is so high, I have been holding off for a week now. Seal-Send-Time: Tue, 11 May 2004 22:02:01 -0500 Richard, a tempered spring can only be bent to a certain point beyond its tensile strength then it breaks. the proper way is to anneal it back to its original properties then bend it to the desired shape and then heat treat it to the desired hardness. there are many heat treating processes for many different alloys most high carbon steels have to be heated to a cherry red and SLOWLY cooled to anneal them, then it can be machined. hope this sheds a little light on the subject. "the machinist Handbook" has all you need to know on this subject.
