Richard,
You might consider making a tailspring from the carbon fibre leaf spring from
a Chev. Astro van.they are very light and strong,also,the material is easily
worked and cheap to come by at any auto scrap yard.
I made the main gear for my Stits Flut-r-bug from this and after 200 hours have
had no trouble.

The first leg proved to be a little too springy (can you say Tigger?)
so I had a thicker one made. (1.5 T)
It's a flat leaf automotive spring - slightly reshaped for a tailwheel.
An hour or so running around on the ground bent the tailwheel up maybe
15 - 20 degrees!?!
So back to the Spring shop.
Turns out they just cold bent the flat stock and didn't reheat it.
(Their oven hasn't been fired in five years.)
So they made me two more just like the other one....
Best explination I got was that bending the tempered steel might
cause it to lose temper.
Is this just another one of those things I didn't know I didn't know?

The carbon fibre springs form the rear suspension of the Astro from the mid 80s
to about 1998 model year.It is in the form of a mono-leaf on either side of the
diff.,just like conventional leaf springs.They are about 4 feet long,3"x3/4"
at the ends,1"x2" at the middle.They are easilly cut and filed,they will tolerate
holes being drilled,resist splitting,and since they never seem to break
in an overloaded van,they can handle shock loads quite well. John.

Sorry Calbie, I can't quote your message, for some odd reason.
The Astro spring suggstion has popped up before.
I guess I screwed up the design part. In order to strengthen the
tailwheel leg connection I decided to bend the spring to shape
rather than adding some burried structure to attach it to.
Next time I'll rethink that and plan on using a flat -unbent-
leaf.
But for the time being, I think I got hung up on point 4 (again)...
There is what you know you know,
what you know you don't know,
what you don't know you know,
and what you don't know you don't know.
That last one is sometimes a problem!
