--> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Mike Mears" <mike.mears@bbc.co.uk> Whilst doing the annual permit renewal, we were influenced by this series of correspondence and had the bottom end of the wing stuts x-ray tested. Even though they were nearly twenty years old, no problem was found. Thank you for not accepting everything as done by anyone else, including my hero, Steve Wittman. His achievevments and contributions are proof of his genius but there is always room for improvement. NASA would have to say the same thing about our space shuttles. Your engineering analysis is invaluable. I appreciate Jim Stanton's attitude (I haven't seen the correspondence) but he must be livid about Jim Clements mods!?!? Are there any published analysis (spelling for plural??) for the W-10? Any published figures for G limits? Rick, I certainly agree with your philosophy of design and taking responsibility for the adequacy of whatever we homebuilders do. Thanks for your explanation, but I hope you will be kind enough to also post a picture of the clevis arrangement for those of us struggling to visualize the concept. Considering the number of ancient Tailwinds still being flown, do you know if anyone has any knowledge of lift struts that have been tested non-destructively and/or cut open to check for internal rust and what has been found. Maybe all of us should be taking some positive action on this ? Your thoughts? Eric... A great affordable alternator is sold by Niagra Air Parts. A nice 40 amp unit with regulator. Installed in my Harmon Rocket and has worked flawlessly and reliably. Starter? I use a Skytec on the Rocket also but haven't been able to install one on my Tailwind because of the modified carb system that's in the way. I have a brand new one sitting on the shelf that I can't use until I revise my intake arrangement. I will charge you what it cost me and provide free shipping if you want it. They are the way to go unless you shell out the big bucks for B&C. B&C's stuff is real nice but honestly doesn't do anything any better than the above mentioned products. Where did you find your 0-320? Was it a freshly overhauled unit without some of the accesories? Good Luck, Weav ---- Original Message ----- From: Eric Schlanser To: TailwindForum@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, May 24, 2004 1:11 PM Subject: [TailwindForum] Starter, alternator, and firewall Some archived posts refer to Mark Landol as a supplier of an alternator and starter suitable for the Tailwind. Another post said to get the B&C regulator and buy an alternator that fits it. Another said Pep boys. What are builders doing now? My 0-320 came without an alternator and starter. Also, does anyone have a good picture or drawing of their firewall with components (gascolator, regulator, oil filter, etc.) attached but engine out of the way? thanks, Eric Schlanser - in Kalamazooo
