Dennis,
Check with Joe Dixon of Fon du Lac, WI (920)922-6870 and Naples, FL (941) 513-9134.
He built a very nice Continental 0-300 powered W-10, NX34JD.

Anyone out there have an O300 Clement cowling? The original mold is gone, I would
like to use one as a starting point for a new cowl for my Tailwind. I'm also
looking for an aluminum cooling plenum off a tightly cowled 0200.
I just received an EFIS from Dynon Avionics, it's a beautiful unit, I would like
to hear from anyone who has installed one, it requires the use of a special
serial port cable from Radio Shack and calibration from a laptop. Thanks Dennis

I would appreciate information about the dimensions for a prop extension for a
Lycoming 0-320 with the Madden/Clement/Alley type cowl. I think it's 6 inches
long but am not certain. I need the dimensions for material, wall thickness, shape,
etc. The plans don't provide the information. I can have a local machinist
make it if I have the dimensions. Thanks,

Eric... There are a couple of parts that you just don't buy from your "Local
Guy".... One of them is the prop Extension. Get a Saber Mfg'd unit. I'm sure
Jim has their number and the length is 4 inches (I think). Judy Saber has done
a Great job of making these for all the Long EZ/ Vari Eze people, the racing
community, RV's, etc etc.... Don't get me wrong.... Our local guys can certainly
do the machining IF they have the right dimensions BUT, there are lot's
of details besides the Extension itself to deal with. Drive Lugs properly installed,
smooth inside radii, AND a GREAT reliability record. Enough of my yickity
yack... I'm sure Jim will advise the same..
Good luck, sounds like you are getting the front end ready to rock,

Eric,
It's a 4 inch and I suggest you get the 7" diameter. I bought one from Saber a
year or so ago...top quality all the way around. If you're going to use the
same spinner stabilizer that Jim C. uses, be sure you tell him that you're a Tailwind
builder and you want the 3/4 hole in the extension and crush plate.

Judy is no longer involved with the company but the guy who owns it now retired
from his job as maintenace/shop supervisor for Commanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant
near Glen Rose Texas....he knows his way around a lathe. He's also a homebuiler...fly's
a T-18 off a grass runway where his shop is located. Give him
a call, he's very good to work with.

Well I got the yellow shot this weekend. Now I have to paint the doors and boot
cowl and then stripe it. I was told I could wet sand the paint with some 2000
grit and dull the finnish. I thought I would buff the fabric out then dull the
paint and try to buff it back to where the gloss is about the same. Anybody
ever done anything like that before. After the shiny paint I found out how wavy
the cowl is. I'm about to get the extra plane out of my hangar, so I'll have
room to start building me a W-10 this winter. I'll use all the prefab cowling,
pants, etc. that I can get...............Bob 149

Bob, try a Scotchbrite pad instead of the 2000 paper. Sands more uniform going
around corners. Then buff slightly. Jim C

This Tailwind is pictured in the EAA Custom Built
Sport Aircraft Handbook printed in 1991. The caption
states that the builder is Ray Downs. I've not seen
this Tailwind pictured anywhere else. Does anyone know
where it is?

Interesting tailwind. It looks like it has the old flat bottomed wings, but
perhaps with tapered tips. It also looks like it has the old rattray cowl,
similar to what I used on my W-8. Had the same problem I did with not
enough room to enclose the exhaust pipes. I cut out and reglassed the
bottom of mine, and later went with the RV intake scoop.

-----Brian-Ray died a few years ago and he used to keep the W-8 at corona Calif
. I might be able to fine out. Also he built that little low wing all wood
plane , The Corby starlet CJ-1. Its listed in the aircraft spruce cat.
He had the same paint designs. Gordon- 9168Q
