Larry, The 135# was our baggage for the first Kittyhawk to Oshkosh race, i had my Son with me and supplies for the week. i had reinforced the baggage area for 32 gal aux tank but did not get it done for the race so we just pitted in Dayton and continued on. My CG is slightly different from a stock TW as the wing was moved forward on the spars, puts the fuel tank closer to the center of lift but passengers and baggage farther behind. As the fuel burns off it actually flies better as it is a little nose heavy with the I0-360 and constant speed prop with full fuel (34gals) and no baggage. I am curious Dennis about the 135 lbs during a race. Was it fuel ? Heck I thought you would have taken out the kitchen sink during a race ! How did it handle upon landing and fuel burn off with the weight in the rear. Thanks Larry H. ----- Original Message ----- From: flamini2 To: TailwindForum@yahoogroups.com Sent: Sunday, June 06, 2004 6:12 PM Subject: Re: [TailwindForum] JUMP SEATS IN TAILWINDS Larry, i have a reinforced baggage floor using Tripacer alum spars and 727 honeycomb floorboard. Max wt to date is 135.5# weighed on a scale during a race. i could see a sideways jump seat with no problem. Approx 1140 empty and 1880# gross raced at 196mph and climbed during the race to 12,500' to clear weather. i have short W-9 wings but lots of power and prop. If so, what kind of weight limit. With full fuel, how many pounds of people and luggage have any of you experienced? Anyone know off the top of your head what empty and gross is supposed to be and if the plane is capable of more than that structurally and if the landing and stall speed is or would be affected very much. Larry, Funny you should mention the boats, i was looking at a 33' Cat with two 300hp Yamaha's that had a 250 range with a 300gal tank, 55.8 gph at 43mph and bragging about it!!! Of course I didn't know that but that was the only reason I could figure you would want to haul around extra weight during a race. I know guys that race sailboats and, (hee hee what a comparison) strip most everything from inside to get extra partial knot speed. Heck when you are making 8 knots, 8.2 would be great wouldn't it? Oh well, I love going fast but I will have to admit that I like sailing because I am flying a tandem wing (slowly of course) with both wings on one side of the fuselage and I am not looking for a place to land all the time! :) One more thing when on the lake-I am racing anyone close all the time whether they know it or not.
