I had a good time. Lots of Tailwind builders but no Tailwinds. Met
two brothers from nearby who own a W8 built in Minneapolis in 1963.
They keep it on a farm strip which I think is 2200'. No problem with
2 people on a hot day. Has a C90 with metal prop. They also have a
1500' strip with obstacles on both ends and have flown the Tailwind
out of there with favaroble wind conditions. Ken and Paul Dannenburg
were there with Cougar and Monocub. The Cougar is a real good
perdformer with 0 290. Both have ground adjustable props. Ken makes
the blades and Paul makes the hubs. Cougar got off at least as good
as a W10, temp in 90's, not much wind.Cougar and Monocub took off
together, takeoff run was similar for both. Marquart Charger all the
way from Washington state, Maule and Interstate L6 from Decatur, AL.
Quite a few local airplanes showed up late Sat.

Jim Stanton gave us a lot of information on the Tailwind Friday and Saturday afternoon.
He is a walking encyclopedia about the Tailwind. I don't think anybody
knows any more about them that is alive today. He was a Tailwind Forum himself.
Some others besides those Jim Stanton mentioned in his post of those in attendance
with Tailwind interests included Mike Wolf of St Louis, MO, Rich and Nicole
Wells of Louisville, KY, John Downing and son Scott from Michigan, Jerry Hey,
Indiana. Bill Haskell of Texas showed pictures of his amazing 585 lb, 65 hp
"Lightwind". It has passed its airworthiness inspection and is ready to fly but
has not flown yet. Estimates are it should do over 140 mph, 4 gph. Range 400+
miles on the 11 gals. it carries if memory serves me.
Jerry Hey ably moderated the Tailwind forum. In the TW forum, Ken Dannenberg explained
how he built fiberglass wing tanks in his wood winged Cavalier. As a Cougar
builder, he figures it could be done the same way in the TW wing. I can't
remember all of them, but other forums and workshops included windshield vacuum
forming, Corvair engines, AN hardware, covering, fighter replicas, aircraft
maintenance. Tours of Frasca's simulator factory were conducted.
We watched Rudy Frasca's kid run out of gas in the P-40 while doing a low high
speed pass over the runway 500 ft in front of us. That got pretty exciting but
he switched tanks and landed safely with a strong enough engine. Rudy announced
that he forgot to tell his kid that the tank is not trustworthy. Rudy paraded
the Spitfire around in taxi mode. It's really pretty and sounds wonderful even
taxiing. There was a full size Focke Wolf190F replica from Croatia with a
huge Russian radial engine that was interesting.
About 300 people paid admission. As Paul Poberezny told us, the important thing
is the quality of the gathering, not the quantity. The important thing is not
the number of airplanes but the qualifications and motivations of the people
that were together. They were some movers and shakers in grassroots aviation.
Paul P and his wife, Audrey, and their granddaughter were there with prodigious
volunteer efforts. Many EAA types were there. Some from the FAA including the
Deputy Director of Aircraft Certification who in 1968 worked at the EAA for
Paul P while in college. Now he is retiring from his career with the FAA and
is going to go to work again for Paul P in the SAA.
I at least had a pretty cool time.
The attached picture from Saturday pm shows from left to right, Mike Wolf, John
Downing and Rich Wells.
