Do I have something to say about it,YEEEHAAAAAH GIDDY UP just about covers it. But Fred told me later when I asked him if he was trying to scare me. and you have to hear Fred's voice in your head when you read this, "no. I just wanted to make sure you got a good ride". 'Good ride' is something of an understatement; the water tower to the North West I now know makes a really nice pylon. We then headed up to Jerome's to buzz around for a while and Fred got around to doing a victory roll @ 180 indicated. I'm sure the roll was 1G all the way but we got around to pulling a G or 2 here and there and the plane is rock solid of course, but still you can't help but be impressed by that, when you are used to hearing squeaking and creaking upon just about everything you do in a Cessna 150. People just don't know, they just don't know. I guess Fred finally got tired of hearing me say YEEEHAAAAAH so we headed back for the obligatory low pass and I saw at least 235 on the clock from my view angle. A short pull to about what seemed like two hundred feet or so and Fred demonstrated some knife edge flying and turns at 200 indicated which all seemed to be at 1G. Then the big pull up, we are going almost straight up but the plane is taking forever to slow any, and I don't really get to register in my brain what the VSI says because I notice Fred turn his head toward me and he has that big grin on his face. The patented Fred Weaver big grin with just enough mischief in it that I no longer wonder what the climb rate is and start wondering what he has in mind for the big finale.another roll.LOOP MAYBE! The mind reels, and I remember actually mouthing the words, "Are you going to do it?" they don't come over the intercom because I am more or less thinking out loud. So the next thing Fred does is just twist slowly back to the straight ahead position with that big grin and levels off gently at pattern altitude, we both grin all the way to touch down, with Fred satisfied I guess by just raising the uncertainty. Great ride Fred THANKS! -Danny

Callbie Over 30 years and the Four Runner is still flying, these are proof of how well you designed and built the Four Runner. Are any Four Runner builders close to completion? 0.0 DIET_1 BODY: Lose Weight Spam I want to thank Malcolm Lovelace also for a ride. Malcolm's award winning nose dragger doesn't have 180 H.P. but the tail dragger he is building now might, he didn't say-but it ain't no slouch and what's 160 H.P. chopped liver? We took off and had 207 on the gps by the length of the field. I don't remember if that is kts or mph but we were truckin right along. I noticed Malcolm fiddled with the trim 2 or 3 times and I guess he figured it was just the extra weight (lard) in there with him, but he finally noticed he had left 5 degrees flaps in from take-off!! Needless to say it made a difference when he got the flaps off. I might add that Malcolm and Fred both fly with just the thumb and first finger. At speed all that is necessary for any stick input is a slight pressure change, the kind of pressure change that barely changes the skin color where your fingers touch the stick. I gotta have a 10 now. Tailwinds are rock solid. People just don't know, they just don't know. Malcolm, thanks man, for the ride and for putting such a beautiful and great flying plane into the world. -Danny

    From: Jerry Hey <j-winddesigns@thegrid.net>
Everybody, the new web site, http://j-winddesigns.com, is now on line. It has very little content but will grow with time. Right now, you can download the CAFE report and the last four issues of the Tailwind Times in PDF format. It takes about 4 minutes on a 56 K modem to download a complete issue of the TT. You can view the PDFs on line or move them to a folder on your desktop for immediate access whenever you want or you can print them. Eventually all back issues of the TT will be available. You will see a navigation bar on the left side. At present there are only four choices but as more materials are added, the selections will grow. Lastly, we have a glitch in how the site is functioning that will be dealt with. Does not stop us from using the site at this time, however. The old construction photos are still available. Eventually they will be organized by subject. That is about it. Not too exciting at present but the seed has been planted. Jerry Go to: http://j-winddesigns.com http://j-winddesigns.com

Subject: Varnishing wing interior - Problems
--> Tailwind-List message posted by: mike_tailwind@att.net Just so no one else makes this mistake: I decided to varnish the inside of one of the wings, but everywhere the varnish touched the West epoxy the varnish turned tacky and would not dry. Unfortunately I varnished the inside of the bottom skin which was entirely covered with West. The varnish was a Spar urethane from Minwax. The West epoxy was fully cured for several months, and sanded to remove any amine blush. So now I don't know whether to wait and see if it will eventually harden, or just take out some rags and thinner and try to remove the stuff. Has anyone else had this problem? -Mike

It was fun to fly next to Lee on his trip to Baraboo. The sky was friendly and fun with the puffy Cumulus and I just had to get some pics. Some turned out pretty good, others just didn't work out. Luc shared two of the best and I hope you all liked them. Lee was surprised at all the interest in the airplane as he doesn't have a computer and didn't have any idea how many people wanted to see it. Calbie, Lee has changed cowls and added A LOT of airflow thru it. I believe this is why the airplane has slowed down some. We were cruising at 9,500 feet and Lee could get almost 20" of manifold pressure while spinning at 2300 rpm. This provided a fuel burn for him at about 8.5 gph while zipping along at 160 mph TAS. A note here.... I was only able to carry 14.8" while turning 2000 rpm while trying to stay on his side. I was only burning about 6 gph at that power setting. Our ride from Cooperstown, ND to Baraboo was exactly 3 hours. Now I know how to really save gas and still go a long ways. Just a little weird flying with the engine just barely above an idle...still at 160 TAS.. not bad. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the pics.
