Red, I went to Kent Paser's forum on speed mods at OSH. One of the subjects
was exhaust systems. Kent described the use of port mismatching and
anti-reversion cones to reduce the amount of exhaust that flows back into
the cylinders during the valve overlap.
Could something like this be incorporated into your TW exhaust, or has it
been already?
Thanks
Bill

Dave.... So glad you are ok. Glad your daughter wasn't riding with you at
the time. Got a little slow? It was fun watching you zoom around for a few
days before the airplane got "reconfigured". How many parts are salvagable?
The wings appear to have survived? Looks like the gear did it's best to
save your spine. Any damage to you at all? The Tailwind is sure a tough
little plane isn't it. I remember when Russ H had his little impact with
the iced over lake. When the event came to a stop, he just opened the door
and got out.
Glad to hear you are whipping up another Tailwind.

I have a vague recollection that the landing gear was "designed" to
collapse to absorb energy in a crash. Does anyone know if this is
true? More importantly, it definitely works that way. It is another
wonderful thing about the Tailwind. Jerry

I will have some stuff to say after we find out if it was Lou Hagler that
crashed it. It was a nice plane with a GOOD engine (Cont 0-300D)

Jerry: I wonder how that would work with the trike configuration, with the
main gear pointing the "wrong" way. The nose gear could take part of the
impact.

In boatbuilding we routinely varnish over West to protect it from UV damage.
Normally use Captains' Varnish from West Marine but any brand should work,
very strange.

West System recommends the combined use of varnish and West epoxy to enhance the
performance of each. You might try to call the West System technical support
number at 989-684-7286 for advice. I have found them to be quite helpful. Eric

I recently purchased a flying W-10. It currently does not have a static port.
Where would be a good location for one?

I talked to West. They recommended removing the varnish with mineral spirits and
then celaning the epoxy with water and a scotch bright pad to remove any amine.
I did look back through the West book and it mentioned that some urethanes do not
like the chemicals in the hardener and will turn sticky.
I have removed most of the sticky with mineral spirits and have rinsed and rubbed
the surface with scotch bright. For the second wing I'm just going to brush
some West on the spars, and bare wood and be done with it. For this wing, I
think I will put a thin coat of West in the sanded areas of the plywood.

I had good success with my W-8 putting one on the left boot cowl just like a Cessna
150. Clement puts them on the bottom of the plane near the tail, and that
works also.

Jim C or any one--What works good for an oil breather/separator. Mine had that
cheap one the ACS sells for 38 bucks and it didn't do anything. I Built the
one that Tony Bingelis shows on page 93 of his book on engines. Its about 80%
better. but still not enough. I even considered putting 2 of them in . Go from

Weav,
A lot is salvagable. Right now it looks like just the airframe and engine mount
are a total loss, but I will have to check everything out.
I'm really not hurt. I wanted to do a bike race on Sunday, but my wife would not
let me. No back injury. No cuts. There is a big bruise on my ass, across my
shins, and my right hand is bruised. The landing gear and engine mount took the
hit.
