Tailwind-List Usage Guidelines

The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Tailwind-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Tailwind-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Tailwind-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Tailwind-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I

Fact is the previous owner was having trouble with overheating. So the
plane was in another town and I couldn't see the cowl with the plane so I
just made sure it was going to cool. The snoot could stand to be cut back a
little too don't you think? There is a long to-do list on it. One thing at
a time. Baby steps, baby steps.

That is a naca type inlet for the oil cooler. The big scoop is pulling on

Dave,
It has O-200 power with Armstrong starter, no electrics, both mags have
impulse and it starts very easy with throttle all the way back once the
cylinders smell a little fuel. It does have a 9 volt battery for the fuel
gauge. You push in the button and hold, the needle swings over to read
battery condition then falls back to fuel level; idea being if the battery
reads low, so will the fuel. I have two intercoms to choose from, neither
of which is installed (passengers not a priority for now). The GPS and the
radio are hand held jobs; radio has VOR on it which will probably work if
you have the station in sight. GPS came new from Ebay, hunnert bux! The
interesting thing about the little Magellan 315 is it has been adopted by a
hobbyist that won't let it die much like the commodore 64. This guy has
taken the free data CD's published by the Gov. and produces free aviation
databases for download. The advice you gave me about a lightweight starter
and battery was not wasted, merely down a ways on the to-do list.

Jim.... How is it that you think you are getting 27 to 30 miles per gallon?
I just figured out some of my best numbers and at 208 mph cruise speed,
burning 7.6 gallons per hour, I'm only getting 26... And those are real
miles. That is a clean W10 that weighs a lot less, uses a Lycoming 0-360
with fixed pitch flying at 16000 feet running lean as can be.... Now...
With a favorable tailwind component, I've seen much bigger numbers but they
don't count for this discussion.
Malcolm, you have a clean trike running a Lyc 0-320.... What have you seen
as your best "real" mpg figure?
Dave Magaw, same parameters, same question? I would love to see Magaw's
numbers as he has flown the airplane over several thousand miles and at
altitudes that would provide good numbers.
Our aspect ratio's and efficiency just have to deliver better results....
Jim, are you turning that engine down around 2200 rpm at altitudes of????
And when you are, what is the "true airspeed" that provides you with 27-30
mpg?
All that without wheelpants and the flatbottomed W8 Wing? I'm stumped....

Going to Baraboo this year I flew at 4500 ft. 8.9 gal./hr. or about 20

Well today I went to Oakdale and back to Yolo Co.. Each way I was running
at 2600 RPM and at cruise burning 8.0 GPH (per the fuel flow gage which is
fairly accurate). My ground speed on the way down averaged about 205 MPH
which results in 25.6 MPG, and on the way back 170 MPH resulting in 21.2
MPG. I have gone up to higher altitudes on other trips and got the fuel
flow down to 7.5 GPH at an average cruise speed of 185 or 24.6 MPG.
BTW, I have now put about 80 hours on N168A this year since March, which I
figure I have traveled over 14,000 miles in it.
I really like that plane.

Flew Danny's W-8 today, she did great! Needs a little rigging work, but after all,
she's been disassembled and reassembled, and that after a long period of inactivity.
This airplane has fly-in stickers on her from when I was 12 or so,
and I'm 47. Except for a spring that broke in the pilot's seat under a couple
of g's and like to have scared the shit out of me, everything worked real good.
The O200 reportedly came out of a Cassut racer, not sure what that means, but she
ran strong, and seems to be propped good, running up to about 2750 level full
throttle 1500 msl, showing close to 160. Tailwheel is about and inch in diameter
(kidding) and demands attention.
Great to see all your hard work rewarded, Danny, in getting this classic back in
the air.

Thanks are all I can say, but I sure am obliged and hope I can return the
favor in some way. Put some hours on that dammed thing. I am putting in an
order for a 6 inch wheel as soon as I get off here, and will dig through the
aluminum pile for rudder trim tab material.
I owe you big time man.
