Bob, I did the same as Dave shows on one of my TWs but if I remember right the
tubes come real close to the oil pan. Might be best to hang the engine on to fit
the tubes.
On the cracked tube, weld it up and put a gusset down the side extending about
1" past the crack.Jim C

Bob:
What I did to mine--and you are on your own as far as the engineering aspects--is
shown in the attached picture with the red lines.I welded in two tubes from
the bottom engine mount bushings (or whatever you call them) on the engine mount
to the closest large cross tube.Hope this helps.

This is what my engine mount looks like. Now while I have this all off should
I put the tubes on the bottom like Dave said he did on his? The way I remember
him saying was to add a couple of tubes to the bottom mounts over to the side.
Am I remembering right??????????? Bob 149

Similar story....we have just finnished re-covering the fuselage and
tailfeathers on G-BJWT. When we stripped the fabric off we got a shock.
There used to be a lifting handle on the port lower longeron, just in
front of the tailplane. Years ago it broke off, it was patched over with
fabric and the back end was lifted by picking up the tailwheel spring.
When stripped, we found that where it broken off it had taken with two
circles out of the wall of the longeron, about 3/4" diameter. It had
been like that for 10 years or more!

See AC 43-13 for repairs.
We had a close call early this summer when two airplanes landed in
opposite directions.
The prop on the plane rolling out on the ground got the wheel pant of
the biplane still in the air.
The biplane guy went around. His main gear was dammaged, but functional
and he landed safely.
Investigating the damage to the biplane we (months!) later found the
lower longeron / firewall tubes broken on both sides of the plane.
Scary....Richard

Bob, My foot note on your break is that it broke right about where the
welding stress would be. Every time I failure check a practice weld it
breaks about where yours did. I've found Tig welds seem to be more
susceptible to this than than gas welds. If I were you I'd replace the
entire tube. Dave Conrad

Another approach is to find a next-size-larger tube,
split it lengthwise and use that to patch a break.
But do check 43-13.
There are some gotchas that can cause problems later.
Like squared off ends on the reinforcing tube?
That creates a stress rizer at the end of the patch.
On my bud's biplane...
The vertical tubes at the firewall still had the little circles (of the
broken off longeron) so we carefully took those off with a die grinder
leaving the bottom of the tube perfectly shaped (and still closed off).
The bottom longerons were sliced off a few inches ahead of the main
gear cluster leaving a nice stub.
A new bottom forward longeron (next larger) tube was slipped over that
and nextled neatly to the bottom of the firewall tubes.
The diagionals on the sides and bottom were spliced the same way.
It's all welded up now and he's patching up the cover.
Ought to be back in the air again this year?
Richard

Joe, The schedule is ...well there's breakfast, then comes lunch, then dinner.
Richard and JohnD and Malcolm are doing a breakfast jungle. There's a tiny lunch
box at the field. Two minutes of walk up the highway takes you to Sam's Place,
a nice ribs restaurant decorated with model airplanes for dinner. And as Dave
Stamsta revealed, there are a couple of superb ice cream places in Plainwell.
Kalamazoo has the Street Rod Nationals North going on this weekend if you
want more than food. But mostly it's a chance to go over Wittman designs and put
faces to some of the names you talk to here and can use as a midwest resource
for those building questions. Hopefully there will be one or more Tailwinds.
Get you motivated. That's about as far as it goes for Tailwind planning. Be
looking forward to meeting you whenever you can make it. Bring your rib and Buttercup
plans to share.
I expect we will be there on Saturday and early Sunday before heading back home.
If anyone is planning on staying overnight, you may want a tent as there is
not a motel room within three counties due to the street rod show. We can put
up a small crowd if you need to have a couch to sleep on and a shower. Eric -
