--> Tailwind-List message posted by: Rich Ellis <rjrellis@yahoo.com> Malcolm ... Can you tell us a little about the 3 Tailwind under construction at your place: 1. Stage of construction; 2. Standard W-10s or new modifications; 3. Wood vs. Metal wings; 4. Engine selections; 5. Nosedragger vs. taildraggers. Appreciate your sharing your projects with us. --> Tailwind-List message posted by: Malcolm.Lovelace@CooperTools.com I'm building 3 W-10 taildragger fuselages with Clement mods, wood wings. The 3 are done through basic fuselage. 2 of them are for friends, they will build the wings and finish. On the first one I am working on the doors, then sheet metal next then it's out the door. The 3rd. one is mine, it will have an O-320 and all the things correct that I did not like on the first one. Hope I can out run Fred with this one and maybe keep up with Jim C's new one. > -----Original Message----- > From: Rich Ellis [SMTP:rjrellis@yahoo.com] > Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 9:43 AM > To: tailwind-list@matronics.com > Subject: RE: Tailwind-List: Re: Giant Engine for a Tailwind > > --> Tailwind-List message posted by: Rich Ellis <rjrellis@yahoo.com> > > Malcolm ... CJ... If you send it to Matt for the "Photo Share" on Matronics, we can all go see it whenever we want. ie: I'd like to see it BUT, I only have high speed access when I'm at my hangar. It would be fine to go look at it then... But to see it here at the house would take a little while. The address for our photo share is... http://www.matronics.com/photoshare Just send the picture/s there along with some description/text... Then stand back and watch it happen! I would like to post it, but it is a 2mb file. If anyone wants to see it email me. If the group wants to see it, the guys with fast planes and slow internet connections will just have to be sore. Subject: Re: Giant Engine for a Tailwind
--> Tailwind-List message posted by: Malcolm.Lovelace@CooperTools.com No, I don't have it listed, Kepes is West of me. Brian Alley has landed in his TW. Clear approaches on both ends. 60 acres of beans on East end, 150 acres on West end that is 75 ft lower than my runway. Unless there is a lot of wind I land to the East and roll up hill. The strip is 1850 ft long I usually land and am stopped in 1200 ft. If you don't like what you see KUYF is 6 miles to the East. > -----Original Message----- > From: Dennis Flamini [SMTP:flamini2@comcast.net] > Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 11:30 AM > To: tailwind-list@matronics.com > Subject: Re: Tailwind-List: Re: Giant Engine for a Tailwind > > --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Dennis Flamini" > <flamini2@comcast.net> > > Malcolm, > i plugged the coord in my GPS, is the strip called Kepes? > Looks to be between I-70 and I-40? > How are the approaches? > Have other planes been landing there? > What direction is the runway? > Dennis Flamini N564DF race #53 Chicago > ----- Original Message ----- > do not archive > > > From: <Malcolm.Lovelace@coopertools.com> > To: <tailwind-list@matronics.com> > Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 10:06 AM > Subject: RE: Tailwind-List: Re: Giant Engine for a Tailwind > > > > --> Tailwind-List message posted by: Malcolm.Lovelace@CooperTools.com > > > > We will be looking for ya! > > > > > -----Original Message----- > > > From: Fred Weaver [SMTP:Mytyweav@earthlink.net] > > > Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 10:45 AM > > > To: tailwind-list@matronics.com > > > Subject: Re: Tailwind-List: Re: Giant Engine for a Tailwind > > > > > > --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Fred Weaver" > > > <Mytyweav@earthlink.net> > > > > > > The hamburgers and hot dogs sound good to me! > > > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > > From: "Stephen Doughty" <usaviator1@hotmail.com> > > > To: <tailwind-list@matronics.com> > > > Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 5:44 AM > > > Subject: RE: Tailwind-List: Re: Giant Engine for a Tailwind > > > > > > > > > > --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Stephen Doughty" > > > <usaviator1@hotmail.com> > > > > > > > > The 9th would be good for us, and if the wx stinks, the 16th would > be > a > > > good > > > > back up. > > > > > > > > Anybody else have input? I'm firming up the plan for my project. I've decided to hybridize the Buttercup and the Tailwind, hence the Tuttercup. The wing and fuselage from firewall to the seats, will be Buttercup, aft , W-10 including the empennage. The plane will be a tri-gear. Fuselage width will be 42". While my research indicates the leading edge flap may be only marginally beneficial, I'll use it anyway. I'm looking at substituting aluminum for steel wherever feasible - flaps, ailerons, horizontal stabilizer, flippers, rudder, control system components - to save weight. Joe Maj

Malcolm, Got it all on but the springs. Didn't have time to put those on. that Rick Crosslin guy showed up. Got to RIDE IN IT instead of work on it. :-) Rick said the wheel is much better, but he likes the softer one with the big rubber on it. I taxied it after Rick left and it seemed like it required considerably less force to turn and had finer graduation. The old one had 2.5 inches at the rudder horn and 2 inches at the wheel. Now it is the same both places so that had to slow it down some. Also it was binding before full rudder deflection, and I got that fixed. Pic attached. THANKS RICK, you don't know how bad I needed that ride. -Danny Subject: RE: N540CJ From: Malcolm.Lovelace@coopertools.com <mailto:Malcolm.Lovelace@coopertools.com?subjectRE:%20N540CJ&replytoC249D2 A44FC0D411BE6500104B62EB796B0FBA@SPRMAIL> Date: Fri Sep 17 - 3:40 AM --> Tailwind-List message posted by: Malcolm.Lovelace@CooperTools.com <mailto:Malcolm.Lovelace@CooperTools.com?subjectRE:%20N540CJ&replytoC249D2 A44FC0D411BE6500104B62EB796B0FBA@SPRMAIL> Danny, have you tried the new trim springs and the steering rod? Since the front is Buttercup and rear is Tailwind, then just call it Butterwind ! Maybe it will go faster all buttered up like that ! :) Larry H. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dennis Flamini To: tailwind-list@matronics.com Sent: Friday, September 17, 2004 8:37 PM Subject: Re: Tailwind-List: The Tuttercup Joe, Why not Tailcup, Butterwing? I've decided to hybridize the Buttercup and the Tailwind, hence the Tuttercup. The wing and fuselage from firewall to the seats, will be Buttercup, aft , W-10 including the empennage. The plane will be a tri-gear. Fuselage width will be 42". While my research indicates the leading edge flap may be only marginally beneficial, I'll use it anyway. I'm looking at substituting aluminum for steel wherever feasible - flaps, ailerons, horizontal stabilizer, flippers, rudder, control system components - to save weight. I have thought that a W10 with the leading edge flaps would have an even better speed range. Maybe a hidden hinge could be developed for them. Key would be to keep the weight down.
