Subject: | Passing Mt. Shasta |
Finally got the last of my pictures developed and digitized from the Arlington
trip this summer. These are a few taken while going past Mt. Shasta and landing
at Siskyou Co. Airport (which still has a good view of Mt. Shasta in the background).
The fuel flow is reading 7.2 gal/hr. and I was at 2500 RPM. Can't
read the screen of the GPS, but as I recall, we had a bit of a tailwind and were
flat covering the ground at a rapid clip. I have some of crater lake take
a couple hours later, which I will post later.

Keith,
Spray painting is somewhat of an Art. You can have a perfectly adjusted
paint gun and a proper ratio of paint to thinner and the experienced painter
will make it look like a million dollars while the beginner,,,, well you
know. Thankfully your fuselage only needs good coverage and not a
Championship paint job. Consider it practice for the much more demanding
painting to come.
My perspective Keith I.

Allowing for the usual errors does 20 yards of 70" wide ceconite sound about right
for the fuselage and controls?
Thanks in advance.

Dave, the picture was somewhat dark, Brad at the airport, scanned it and
sent it to me. It shows 16,500 feet. I believe the TW is 6168Y, now owned by
Gary Volkman. It has a shorter 23' wing but still climbs close to 500 fpm at
that altitude and doesn't drag it's tail. I believe the airspeed shows about
130-135 mph. Jim C

Hey guys,
Yesterday, we started fitting fuselage tubes into our CNC cut jig. Today, we got
the first side tacked. It went much faster than I expected. We are going to
tack the second side tomorrow. In 15 days of work we have built and finished all
of the ribs, and nearly completed the fuse sides. If we keep up with our current
pace, we will have the wings on the fuse in 3 weeks for their mock up.
I've attached a few pictures, and sent more to Matt for the photo archive. The
pics are of the Bill Schunneman fuse jig, Skip welding, and Skip holding the completed
fuse side today.

Paul, I looked for the fabric order but can't seem to find it. 20 yds does sound
right though. Rough cut the four fuselage sides first then do the smaller parts.

Dave M. : No I didn't have oxygen. Most of the flight was at 12,500.
Jim C. : You topped me with 16.5K. But my picture was better! Wittman topped
you with 20K with 150hp. The highest I've been is about 15.5K. Then I get silly
with no oxygen. Unlegal too, I think.
Bob Wuilleumier has oxygen and He said He was at 18000 on one trip over Lake

The picture wasn't to good but it was worse after it was posted. It must have been
taken about 5-6 years ago with a small cheap camera. Skip had to climb to
17,000 with no oxy on his way back to CA to clear smoke over Lake Tahoe area a
few years ago.I think a O320 TW would easily go over 20,000'

Yeeeeehaaaaaa......
Reminds me of a trip that "Terrible Tailwheel Ted" and I took to Baraboo....
18,000 ft, sniffing the O2, Cruizin' along at a lot of MPH(Well over 225),
sipping 7.6 GPH....but didn't have an opportunity to take a picture of the
instrument panel...Too busy taking pictures of Montana... Sure was cold,
until the heater valve stuck open... Then we gently fried until we could
get on the ground in North Dakota... Gwinner.. Yep Red, it was
Gwinner, ND...non stop from Bonners Ferry, Idaho in 4 hours flat..
Since then, the Cabin Heat Valve has been secured in the "CLOSED"
position.... :) I might change it this winter. hahahhaa.....
