To Brian Alley: At long last it looks like I'll be ready to hang the engine and
prop on O-O to get started on the cowling and other systems. It could take me
a couple of weeks to finish getting the engine buttoned up and hauled out here
to the house.
Would you please start thinking about making a trip to my place to help me with
the cowling? Actually, it'll probably be more like me helping you by getting
you a beer every now and then, 'glas work is my short suit. Let me know what items
need to be purchased before hand, I'll get them delivered here. If you need
to review any pics of the cowl, let me know and I'll send them to you.
Should be a beautiful flight for you this time of year, for sure.
Sorry O-O is taking so long, guys, life has thrown me a few knuckle balls lately,
most of them have hit me on the chin.

We worked on our project this weekend so some further questions came up.
What kind of fuel cap is most recommended
Which flush Cherry rivets or other brand pop rivets do you use to fix the
different aluminum panels to the door and side walls and all the other
riveted fixes.
Have you tried the 90 adapter for the oil filter for Lyc 0-320 and wich
size of the adaptor plate is best?
Thanks in advance for all these answers. Guido

I reassembled my engine today without the rotors. Reassembly took
about 2 hours. Here is what the p ported rotary looks like in front
of a Tailwind. It all fits together rather nicely. The rad will go
underneath the engine and the intake runners will go over the top.
The rear engine mount strut is carried up to a place on the firewall
which will require a great deal of stiffening.
If one wanted to do so, a turbo could be substituted for the exhaust
system. The turbo/P-Port combo can generate up to 800 hp. it is
claimed. Just fly straight up for one minute and level off at 12,000.
What do you think, Fred? Jerry

I used a flush type of filler neck the Jim Clement told me about. I got it
from Wicks. It's not expensive, but it needs to be modified to allow for the
attachment to the tank.

I used Avex 1/8" rivets to fasten the aluminum to the door frame, but any
blind rivet will do. Aluminum rivets would be plenty strong. If you want
flush rivets, these will likely come from some aircraft supply place, but if
a protruding head is acceptable to you, then a commercial rivet will work.
> Have you tried the 90 adapter for the oil filter for Lyc 0-320 and wich

I used an adapter made by B&C Specialties of Newton, Kansas. It was
certainly not inexpesnive, but it did allow for the temperature sender,
vernithern and filter. So far, it has worked well.
I hope that this is a bit helpful.

Mike, Jim's right about a book length description. I used over 200 tabs on my tailwind.
Just think of any place you need to attach something to the primary structure
and add tabs. About 4-6 inch spacing is probably adequate for most things.
However many you add, you will wish you had added a few more when final assembly
comes.

Mike, Explaining that would be like writing a book. Jim
Exactly!
And even if the Tailwind was the specific theme, such a
book would appeal to a much broader spectrum of people.
I think such a book would sell well.
And the offer to write it still stands...

Start thinking "inside out" and the tabs will show you where they go.
In that respect, Jim's photos are priceless.
They show what he's figured out over the course of building (how many?).
The challenge now is for the newbie builder to figure out what he (or
she?) is looking at in the photo.
Why is this detail done that way, and how do I do it?
Pile of steel tube from Dillsburg - $1000
Welding torch - $500
knowing what to do with them - priceless

Yep, Photoshop. While we were playing I though I'd do one. Tailwinds
don't need any help to look good though, especially yours. That classic
look is the hook that kept me coming back. I picked up a tidbit of
information here and there, and now I live, eat and breathe Tailwinds.
Maybe when I get to flying mine this utter obsession will let up some. I
will be getting around to painting mine one of these days; right now I am
working on tail wheel proficiency. I got 3.5 hours in this week in a Cub
and a Champ, hope to get that much more this week. There is no substitute
for good dual instruction, so I am staying after it until I go broke,
which will be soon. I may have to hitch-hike to Malcolms... :-)
