We have finished tacking the fuse. I like working with wood much better! Skip has
really become proficient with the TIG welder. We started on the tail feathers
today. Hope to have them done next week.
We have been thinking about the control stick. Does anyone have thoughts on using
a single center stick, with dual throttles on the L/R? We plan on using a CS
prop. Looks like a Whirlwind 151 composite. 28lbs! Wow that's light. We love
the Whirlwind prop Skip has on his Pitts. Whirlwind is one of our sponsors, and
we get questions, and remarks about the prop at every airshow. I cant say enough
about the quality, and a 3 blade white Whirlwind will look great with the
design of our TW.
Also, has anyone flown the TW with one or more of the doors removed? (At low speeds
of course). I ask because we will be using it as a photo ship, and hope to
remove the right door for the photographers to get air to air photos of Skip
performing aerobatics. I guess we will find out if it works in a few months.
Does anyone have a heated Piper style bladed pitot tube laying around for sale?
What is the best/lightest/strongest material to use for flooring in the cabin,
and baggage compartment? Has any one used a dual toe brake set-up, and are there
any concerns?
Thanks for reading and replying to this long email. I waited until the weekend
so I could get some of you guys out of some HoneyDos.

My personal preference is a modified 'Y' for the control stick. I find it
much better that Steve's
configuration. It could be that I am much heavier than Steve ever thought
about and my legs
are too large for his turned down 'T'. The center mounted throttle then is
fine for pilot or co-pilot. The center located control stick and the center
mounted throttle are much easier to buildl and
install.

CJ: Here's a pic of 393RC stick and dual throttles. I absolutely loved right hand
stick left hand throttle. I got lots of "Steve didn't do it that way" comments,
but it wasn't Steve's airplane, it was mine.

It is still dry here. We had about 10 minutes of light rain. Everything has
moved to the South and the sun is out.

Simply flipping up the right window on an old Cessna tail dragger may be
less trouble than taking the door off a TW. Those old Cessnas may be 80
kts. slower than a TW with the same power, but they are at least a contender
in the photo ship category.

It was a great day for a fly-in, the weather was a little iffy this morning
with about 10 minutes of rain about 9:00 am. After the rain cleared the
Tailwinds started coming in and by lunch time we had 9 airplanes including
mine. Thanks to Richard Jamieson for cooking breakfast and Lori Doughty for
cooking lunch. This was the first fly-in at my place and we will do it again
next year. Listed below are the people that attended and what they were
flying or driving. Thanks to everyone for attending, this is what makes
Tailwinding so fun.

Malcolm,
I noticed that one of the guys (Jim McCulley) that came to your fly-in (I have
noted the name with ******)
was from Warrenton, VA..
Warrenton is almost "next door" to me - I go through Warrenton on the way to work!
I fly our old 172 out of Culpeper (CJR).
I have been building a W10 off and on for the last 6 years and would like to connect
up with
Jim McCulley if possible- did he leave any address or phone info???
Thanks,
Dave Lamphere

Thanks to Malcom for hosting a great fly in. An annual event sounds
great! Hopefully one of these years I will be able to fly in!
Had a great time talking Tailwinds and picking up some good construction
techniques. Who won the "race" race between Dennis and Jim? the 180
hp duel was going on when I had to go.
Thanks again,

Looks good! I noticed the windshield isn't as flat as the original O&O, is that
for a little more head room? That O-360 should sound real nice.
I keep trying to talk Jim into building an IO-540 Tailwind, Fred would buy it as
long as it was faster than his.

Looks like you had a great gathering. Its nice to see so many made it in.
Dunging out the garage here, so I can assemble the W-10. That higher cruise
speed looks like it will make more places a lot closer to home. You guys
really lucked out with Richard cooking the breakfast jungle. JohnD

The lightest material I have found for floors is the material that is used
for floor panels in airliners. It is a honeycomb material with fiberglass face
sheets and runs about 3/8" thick. It is extreemly rigid, probably as strong
as plywood, and is very light. It comes in 4'x8" sheets and can be worked with
ordinary wood cutting blades. I don't known of any source details, but I could
look into it if there was enough interest. I can purchase it by the sheet
through my employer if enough people wanted it to make it worth while to buy
a whole sheet.

We have finished tacking the fuse. I like working with wood much better! Skip
has really become proficient with the TIG welder. We started on the tail feathers
today. Hope to have them done next week.
We have been thinking about the control stick. Does anyone have thoughts on
using a single center stick, with dual throttles on the L/R? We plan on using
a CS prop. Looks like a Whirlwind 151 composite. 28lbs! Wow that's light. We
love the Whirlwind prop Skip has on his Pitts. Whirlwind is one of our sponsors,
and we get questions, and remarks about the prop at every airshow. I cant say
enough about the quality, and a 3 blade white Whirlwind will look great with
the design of our TW.
Also, has anyone flown the TW with one or more of the doors removed? (At low
speeds of course). I ask because we will be using it as a photo ship, and hope
to remove the right door for the photographers to get air to air photos of
Skip performing aerobatics. I guess we will find out if it works in a few months.
Does anyone have a heated Piper style bladed pitot tube laying around for sale?
What is the best/lightest/strongest material to use for flooring in the cabin,
and baggage compartment? Has any one used a dual toe brake set-up, and are
there any concerns?
Thanks for reading and replying to this long email. I waited until the weekend
so I could get some of you guys out of some HoneyDos.

Luc: Cabin height of O-O is unkown, so I made it same as Tailwind, but front bay
is 2" longer and 2" taller than Tailwind, so windshield is sloped much more
than W10.
The Steve Miller pic of O-O gives a good side shot of the slope of the windshield
on the original, some of the pics that are more frontal shots of the original
make the windshield look more sloped than it really is.

Malcolm,
We all owe you a whole-hearted THANK YOU for hosting such a great gathering
of Tailwinders. It was a real pleasure to meet you and all the other guys.
You certainly have an ideal location and facility for such gatherings. I hope
you enjoyed it as much as the rest of us seemed to. I'll be looking forward to
seeing those Tailwinds you have in construction turn out as beautiful as
yours.

Luc: Here is a pic that helps show what I described. The frontal shot makes the

Bruce,
We followed Jim on his way back to Va., had to ask Jim to throttle back to
catch him in the climb and then we went full throttle side by side and Jim's
is faster by quite a bit.
Neither of us had wheel covers and we flew along with him about 15 miles
before we turned back.
Counting rides and fly-bys and 225nm Chicago to Malcolm's i figure about
500nm today and gassed up with 30.3 gals.
1:15 to Malcolms and 1:30 return.
The most fly-bys in recent memory, good job Malcolm!!
PS; i have your tape measure and will mail it back to you Mon.
Thanks again,
Dennis Flamini N564DF race #53 Chicago

The EAA Copperstate Flyin started today. I flew down and checked it out. This
is a newer airport 40 miles south of the Phoenix airport. 700 showplanes are
expected and over 100 commercial display tents. Planes come from all over the
Western USA.
