Looking Great Rick. I really think the O&O could be a popular plane when you get it tested out. I still don't know how you keep your garage so clean however--that plane must just build itself and you spend your time cleaning up after it!! Well if you want an opinion here it is. I prefer a U shaped stick which goes under the leg (or 1/2 of the U just for the pilot.). Personally I like holding the stick with the left hand, leaving the right for throttle, radios, GPS, etc. I also fly a pitts, which is set up for right hand on stick, and I have no problem changing hands. Duel L/R throttles is just more complexity also. The over-the-leg stick per the tailwind plans has one advantage in that it can be easily used by either person in the cockpit, but it does not intrude into the passenger area typically. With a center throttle, the passenger can easily fly the plane. The under-the-leg U stick is a little more difficult for cockpit entry and exit as it tends to be in the way. The T stick can be moved out of the way easier for entry and exit. The main thing I don't like about the Wittman T stick is that I have to move my right leg out of the way for some turns and slips. Unless you really think you will need a heated pitot tube, the simple one shown on the plans works very well, and is a very tidy (drag free) set up. All the tailwinds I have flown, and most I have seen have the brakes and rudder pedals pretty much to plans--and they work well. I personally do not see much need for right brakes because tailwinds are not normally used for training purposes. Jim Clement uses the same plywood used on the wings as floor panels in cockpit and baggage area I think, and the plastic corrogated sign material for side rear panels for the doors and baggage areas. All covered with carpet material or upholstery headliner type material as appropriate. Works well and is light weight. On my W-8 I used aluminum floorboards, with lots of lightening holes, then carpeted--very light also. Dave ----- Original Message - ---- From: CJ Kirby Memphis Tailwind To: Tailwind List Sent: Saturday, October 09, 2004 2:04 AM Subject: Tailwind-List: N540CJ We have finished tacking the fuse. I like working with wood much better! Skip has really become proficient with the TIG welder. We started on the tail feathers today. Hope to have them done next week. We have been thinking about the control stick. Does anyone have thoughts on using a single center stick, with dual throttles on the L/R? We plan on using a CS prop. Looks like a Whirlwind 151 composite. 28lbs! Wow that's light. We love the Whirlwind prop Skip has on his Pitts. Whirlwind is one of our sponsors, and we get questions, and remarks about the prop at every airshow. I cant say enough about the quality, and a 3 blade white Whirlwind will look great with the design of our TW. Also, has anyone flown the TW with one or more of the doors removed? (At low speeds of course). I ask because we will be using it as a photo ship, and hope to remove the right door for the photographers to get air to air photos of Skip performing aerobatics. I guess we will find out if it works in a few months. Does anyone have a heated Piper style bladed pitot tube laying around for sale? What is the best/lightest/strongest material to use for flooring in the cabin, and baggage compartment? Has any one used a dual toe brake set-up, and are there any concerns? Thanks for reading and replying to this long email. I waited until the weekend so I could get some of you guys out of some HoneyDos. CJ Kirby memphistailwind@bellsouth.net N540CJ

----- Original Message ----- From: upsidedownflyboy Subject: [TailwindForum] New Tailwind Owner Hello all, I am going to pick up my partially completed TailWind W-10 next weekend. I have searched the net for all the information I could find, but cannot find any stress numbers other than the initial test where Mr. Wittman load the first five planes to gross and pulled 4 positive G's. Has anyone done a stress analysis? Anyone know what the +/- limits are? I have seen in posting where some people are known to roll their TailWinds, but have also seen that spins are not recommended. I haven't flown a TailWind yet, but the specs seem pretty impressive. Mine will mainly be used for commuting around 150 miles on the weekends, to pick up my daughter who doesn't live with me, but I was wondering if the plane would be strong enough for mild aerobatics. Say flying solo, at low weight, for barrel rolls, a loop maybe, a split s with an entry speed just above stall??? If anyone out there love to turn the world upside down like I do, please let me know your experiences in the TailWind. e International --> Tailwind-List message posted by: Malcolm.Lovelace@CooperTools.com Dennis, the empty weight is 885#, O-320 160 HP, Sterba 68x74. Saturday on take off I only had 12 gallons of gas in the tank so that helped some plus I know what bumps to hit to get off the ground quick. The 3 TW I am working on will be taildraggers and hopefully be 30 to 40 lbs. lighter. I plan to do some long distance traveling in the new one and am considering putting in an aux. tank. > -----Original Message----- > From: flamini2 [SMTP:flamini2@comcast.net] > Sent: Monday, October 11, 2004 1:10 PM > To: tailwind-list@matronics.com > Subject: Tailwind-List: Re: [TailwindForum] Saturday Fly-in at > Lovelace International > > --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "flamini2" <flamini2@comcast.net> > > Malcolm, > Your Tailwind really impressed me with the takeoff from your grass strip > with passenger Lori. > If you have not already posted, how about some info on engine, prop, > weights, etc. > Looks like you could not do better with your next 3 Tailwinds, keep us > posted. > > Also Jim and Bill and others, did you check fuel used when you got home? > Mine was 500nm and 30.6 gals in a real world lots of takeoffs and fly-bys > Tailwind world. > > Dennis Flamini N564DF race #53 Chicago > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Stephen Doughty" <USAviator1@hotmail.com> > To: <TailwindForum@yahoogroups.com> > Sent: Monday, October 11, 2004 8:28 AM > Subject: RE: [TailwindForum] Saturday Fly-in at Lovelace International > > > > > > Malcolm, I almost forgot, thank you also for giving Lori the Tailwind > > experience.
