Dave, Thanks for the report... How many did show up? Did Wilson make it?
With all the fire crews and BIG ASS helicopters working, it took awhile for me
to get out. When I was finally able to depart from Westover, it was 11:20 am.
I flew that direction for about 15 minutes in the Rans before I turned around
and came back. Winds were keeping my ground speed down to 60 kts and I wouldn't
have arrived until 1 pm. I figured I would get there just in time to turn around
and come back home. Glad to see Dennis burning some 100LL in Jerome's W10.
Anyway, I hope you all had a good get together.
See you soon,

We missed you at the fly-in. It was pretty murky with the smoke getting there
in the morning, but really cleared significantly in the afternoon. Going back,
the further north we went the better, and was 20-30+ miles vis. around Sacramento.
Even had a tailwind going back so we covered the ground at a pretty
good clip--about 190-195 MPH.
Dennis had no problem keeping up with me in his O-300 W-10. I want to get my
other prop refinished and try again to see if I have any chance of out running
him.
We had a great time at Fresno, and I want to specially thank Chuck and Bill for
hosting. They are planning again next year too. The food was excellent too.
Maybe one of these years we can have a W. Coast flyin with just the beautiful
weather we have 90% of the time--with no IFR smoke or 45 MPH wind conditions
;
)
I have a few pictures to post when I get the cord and get them off of the camera,
and I am sure others will too. I hope Chuck or Bill will post the attendance
list. It was sure good seeing everyone there.

Yo Chuck and Dave..... We were socked in IFR yesterday because of smoke from
the fires to the east of us.... Hoping the winds will come up from the west
to clear us out. No way we could have flown yesterday... Too dark at the moment
to tell what will happen later this morning. Good thing Fresno was selected
for the event. I will fly down in the Rans S7 Courier... The Tailwind is
in the middle of an annual and I haven't been here to finish it up. Hope to get
it buttoned up next week.
How many Tailwinders are going to show up? Is George coming up from Phoenix?
No Presidential TFR's to deal with now....

Actually Fred, we didn't leave until about 2PM, and you would have arrived about
the same time as Doug Johnson did. He still managed to get lunch too as they
had a ton of food. I think there was 6 tailwinds and one C-172 that showed
up, along with a couple of drive ins. Smoke and wind kept Wilson and Rocky away
as I hear, and Ivan Andersson was held up by house repairs and getting married
(some excuse)!

I got to taxi it around a little today. The engine really runs good. I cant put
my spinner backplate on cause the engine is about 5/8 to short. I guess I'll
shim the motor forward a little. I have some 5/8 aluminum and thought I would
cut out some spacers with a hole saw and put them between the engine and mount.
Anybody see any problem with that? With the wood prop I have on it it will turn
2400 rpm's static, maybe this prop will about right for this engine. I'm going
to do a weight and balance next weekend. Do I weigh it sitting ordo I raise
the tail to straight and level??????????????????????? Bob 149 almost flying

Bob, No problem with the spacers. The Formula One guys kick their
engines all over the place with aluminum spacers between the engine
mount and firewall just as you have described. The ones I have seen
are 1" o.d. x 3/8" i.d. x what ever you want. Jerry

Bob.... Glad to hear the engine is running good. As Jerry said, the spacers should
go between the engine mount and the firewall. This may cause a requirement
for longer bolts.... AND you always weigh the airplane in it's level flight
attitude. This is the only way to get the true weights required to analyze the
CG over the wing chord. And that is the entire reason we weigh the airplanes
in the first place.
We missed Pampa again on the return flight home. Had to go through Big Springs
from Temple, then on to Portalez(PRZ) on the way to Albequerque (AEG)...
Will try again next July 4th. All for the love of a pig.....
