--> Tailwind-List message posted by: Rich Ellis <rjrellis@yahoo.com> Jim .......... Spoke with Ray Peterson the other nite at La Crosse as he spoke on Aircraft Safety. He indicated he spoke with you the other day while in Baraboo. Sounds like your Tailwind is coming along. Haven't had time to do much on my Tailwind but trying to decide on materials for the wings and get my other out soon. Will need a project this winter. rich --- Jim and Donna Clement <168x@merr.com> wrote: > --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Jim and Donna > Clement" <168x@merr.com> > > No, not yet. With the mods that I have made last winter; new crossover exhaust, LSE plasma III, New airbox, better streamlined gear and wheel fairings, reduced weight by 28 lbs and fresh topcoat of paint. I am now turning an additional 200+ rpm static. Static was 2200 before and now I am slightly over 2400 with my 6872 Sterba. I am getting excited, before with two people I was cruising at 185 and could just hit 200 full throttle at 2700. My guess, now is that I need more pitch and a new propeller. Should have the test flight this coming week. You experts, any rules of thumb for pitch, on a conventional plane I have always figured about 4" of pitch changed the rpm approximately 50 rpm. That doesn't make sense with most Tailwinds running a 6872 or 6874 prop. I am assuming that I still want around 2200 rpm static so that at full throttle I will be at 27-2900 for max speed in cruise. How do I contact Sterba for another propeller? Or to rework this one. Other propeller woodartists out there that you have been satisfied with? Paul Charlevoix, MI

Paul, Sounds like you picked up some horsepower in the engine. I like to see at least 2300rpm static for a start and 2750 - 2800 full throttle @ 2500'. Fly it and see what it does. Changing the pitch on a wood prop, it is easier to pick up rpm than to get rid of it. Depends how much wood you have to work with. Paul, I flew yesterday and got 2500 static run up and 2900 full throttle. When it is hot static is 2400 and 2800 full throttle. My prop is a Sterba a 68x74, it works fine because of my short field. If I was on a longer paved runway I would like to have a 68x76. I think you could use more pitch if you had a narrower and thinner blade. I think Cato is your best bet for this type of prop but the cost is twice the cost of a Sterba. Sterba told me he can put in about 2" of pitch. So like Jim said fly it first then decide what you need. Rework the prop you have..... Most prop guys can carve more pitch into it and thin the blades. Then glass it up for superior strength and stiffness. Saves you some money and gives your prop a second chance... BTW.... I totally agree with Jim if you have to go a long ways.... But a couple of inches of pitch can be reached probably with what you have. The props are so THICK when you first get one, there is some meat to work with. Paul, Fly the airplane first and get the numbers on what it does, you might not be to far off. I would stick with Sterba as he would know just what needs to be done to dial in your present prop or build a new one. Changing prop makers is starting over from scratch. A 68-72 from one could be much different than a 68-72 from another. We have been using Felix props. He lived just 35 miles from us but is moving to northern WI. I tried calling Ed Sterba earlier but it was during the Florida hurricane deal and couldn't get thru to him. Both make decent props. --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Fred Weaver" <Mytyweav@earthlink.net> Catto lives about 30 miles away from me..... Great guy and makes a good prop. I had my prop completely stripped and cleaned up by Catto. He trued up the blades so that both would have the same pitch distribution and remachined the back face of the prop hub. Then completely reglassed and refinished it.... I'm a happy customer. Good Luck.
