--> Tailwind-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
As I write this its still November 30th so technically the List Fund Raiser
is still underway! :-) I've gotten so many nice comments from Listers in
the last couple of days along with their Contributions that I just had to
share them with the Lists. Guys, I really appreciate the kind words and
great support that has come in the last few days.
If you've been meaning to support your Lists this month but have just been
putting it off until the last absolute minute, now's a perfect time to make
that Contribution!
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
A special thank you to everyone that has already shown their support. I'm
compiling the List of Contributors and will post it in a couple days. In
the meantime, please read over some of the nice things people have been
saying about the List along with their Contribution...
Thank you!!!

CJ,
Can you describe your flap actuating mechanism and autopilot installation?

Last December, the annual inspection was due and we realised we ought to
bite the bullet and recover the fuselage. It looked OK from a distance,
but the paint was starting to crack off, especially around the
stringers. The previous paint had been on for nearly twenty years. We
finished half-way through this summer, though I've just got round to
organising the pics. We incorporated a door mod that gave us a little
more elbow room. The rear of the door was bent out at the door catch
area to give about an inch and a half more room where you most seem to
need it. The stringers aft of this were extended to fair this in. A
fillet was added to the door post, and tube under the door, for it to
close firmly against. It doesn't seem to have affected the cruise speed.
I've included shots of the work, and some rare snaps of the maestro,
John Bakewell, one of the original builders of the aeroplane, (who now
has built six aircraft, the latest, a Cassutt, is for sale.) He is very
much the Master, and I the apprentice, but it's great to learn from
someone who's probably mey most of the problems before. I count myself
very lucky.

The new panel is available. This new panel was copied
from Jim C's new airplane. Jim says it is easier to
fit the glare shield to this shape if you copy his
front windshield bow.I've attached a photo of CJ
Kirby's panel. The other photos are of the fuel tank
showing CoreMate and the finished layup.

Subject: | Re: EGT Readings |
Curious if any of you are seeing the same indications I am....
On Takeoff with full throttle and showing 2400 rpm I have a 50 degree split
in the EGT's with the front two cylinders running 50 degrees colder than the
rear two cylinders. Max EGT is on #4 at approximately 1540 degrees. (160hp
LYC)
Throttle back to 26-2700 rpm and EGT on all cylinders climbs another 100-150
degrees. With as much as a 150 degree split between the front and rear
cylinders. #4 will now be running approximately 1650 to 1700 degrees. Gets me
worried, this is with the mixture always full rich.
Reduce power below 2500 rpm and Max temps come down and split between front
and rear cylinders is more equal.
I am getting all this information to be concerned about with my Grand Rapids
Technologies EIS system with the EGT probes installed approximately 3" below
the exhaust flange.
My hypothesis is that at full throttle the enrichment is such for climb that
everything is within limits. Throttle back below the "full throttle
enrichment" and my main jet might be too small for the power I am pulling. Possibly
my new crossover system is to blame for the split between the front and rear
cylinders?
Kent Paser in his book talks about noticing similar indications on his
Mustang Too, but doesn't give me enough detail. His reasoning was that Lycoming
optimized the engine for full throttle and everything below full throttle was
a compromise and you would have to have fuel injection to keep it perfect.
Brian and Fred I believe have EIS systems in their birds, are you seeing
anything like this?
Since I am turning way over red line with the current prop and mods and
therefore pulling more power, do you think I should send the carb in and get it
rejetted?
Your thoughts gentleman or possibly a lead on some where to go for an expert
opinion?
Paul
