Hi,
I have an opportunity to buy a very nice W-8 Tailwind with an 0-235. I'm
hoping that I can get the answers to a few questions.
What is the design max weight of the W-8? The plane I am looking at is 890lb
empty. Is it practical to put 2 people (400 lb) and a few pounds of luggage
and 2 or more hours of fuel in a W-8?
Are there relatively simple modifications that can increase the leg room for
the passenger. My girfriend is 6ft tall and all leg (37 inch inseam). The
plane I am considering is an early Tailwind with a tube running straight
across the fuselage that the seatback rests against. I was told that there
is a modification to move the seatback aft. Is this something that can be
done easily to a completed plane? Are there drawings for this available?
I have seen the folding rudder pedals on another W-8. Are there drawings of
this mod available somewhere?
Last, but certainly not least. How challenging is the Tailwind to takeoff
and land? I am a 200 hour pilot with over 100 hours of tailwheel time. But
all of my tailwheel time is in very slow airplanes (Champ, Cub, etc).
The weather prevented me from taking a ride in the plane when I went to look
at it. I hope next weekend is better, it looks like a fun airplane

Dean,
My W-9 Tailwind built in 1968 has 1865 hrs and empty wt=1141# with IO-360
180hp and hartzell prop.
Gross wt with 34 gals and 135# baggage and 400# people is 1876#.
It does have the deeper spar with curved bottom surface of wing but no
tapered wingtips.
there is no cross tube behind the seats to allow the seats to recline more
and move back 2 to 3".
My fuselage is 41" across and 38" deep at the back of the door post about
the same width as the W-10 but wider.
No one has been to tall or too big to get in it!!
It also jumps off the ground in all runway conditions and temperatures and
density altitudes.
i have flown 85hp W-8's and they are nice flying light planes but you can
get that uneasy feeling on takeoff that i never have to worry about.
i am about 20mph slower than New W-10's with 160hp but still cruise about
160kts and 10gph.
Max race speed to date is 196mph in the Sun 100mile race.
Where do you live? if near Chicago i can give you some dual to get a feel
for the TW, you should have no problem but i always advise you check out in
any new plane even a Cub or Champ.
Dennis Flamini N564DF race #53 Chicago
