Jim, Are you using mild steel tubing and having it ceramic coated afterward? If so,how well does it stand up to vibration and thermal loads? It has since been changed to a rubber belting one. The tailpipes should be hung off the engine, not the engine mount. John, Mild steel and coated after. It holds up good. If you don't ceramic coat it, what works good is to coat with anti-seize. When you start the engine the heat in the exhaust bakes the anti-seize and does a pretty good job preventing rust. Put it on using a scotch brite pad, two or three times a year will make it think it is S.S. The stuff I have used was Permatex brand I believe, silver in color. That's an interesting idea,I've been using stainless 409 tubing, but the thinnest I can find locally is .055"wall thickness. It bends nicely, but it's a little heavy.304 is available a little thinner, but my bender will kink it.Aluminized tubing bends very well, but, unless the coating is removed before welding,a lumpy contaminated weld will result, unless MIG is used. This seems to burn the aluminum coating away and leaves a good uniform weld. Are you using mandrel bent elbows fitted together,or a pipe bender? John Koning.Hamilton,Ontario Jim Clement <168x@merr.com> wrote: John, Mild steel and coated after. It holds up good. I have been using a sprint car header kit from Speedway Motors, cutting to fit. Previously I used elbows from JC Whitney but they changed to a heavy wall elbow. The Speedway tubing is lighter. The Whitney elbows are aluminized, ----- Original Message ----- From: john koning To: tailwind-list@matronics.com Sent: Monday, January 17, 2005 9:04 PM Subject: Re: Tailwind-List: another exhaust That's an interesting idea,I've been using stainless 409 tubing, but the thinnest I can find locally is .055"wall thickness.
