Subject: Trip notes
Reposition of Tailwind N564DF
I have decided to move my Tailwind to Florida so it can get some sun and thought
the group would enjoy a few trip notes.
After a few weeks of miserable cold weather and snow in Chi - the wx prog charts
showed strong high pressure system for the Midwest and I decided it was time
to head south. Rather than going direct as I usually do I let my flying partner
David Berelsman plan the route. He used the online AOPA trip planner and low
level airways which added a few miles but kept us out of any improper airspace.
We piled the plane full of luggage and topped off the fuel and were wheels up from
Sanger (C56) at 10:44 local. We climbed to 7500 ft. The winds were predicted
to be 290 @ 25 for the whole trip. Course averaged about 170 degrees.
Here were some of our elapsed times: Indianapolis 0:40 min (180 kts gs), crossed
the Ohio River at 1:12 (182 kts gs) this was just two minutes off the aircrafts
personal record for this distance. We passed Hinch Mtn TN at 2:00 hr (367
miles) and made our only fuel stop at Athens Georgia (AHN) 506 miles in just
under 3 hours. 170 kts gs/10 gph.
Once we were certain we would make Kissimmee before dark we slowed down, put our
hands in our laps, and watched the scenery go by. We also took a little detour
to Leeward Air Ranch in Ocala so N564DF could visit the former home of Steve
Wittman. The current owner David Skipper was very accommodating as we taxied
into his drive for some pix.
The sun was low and warm as we lifted off from Leeward=C3=A2=E2=82=AC=C2=A6 we
touched down in Kissimmee with the horizon glowing purple and the full moon rising.
A little over 5 hours for CHI to FLA. Nice trip.

Thanks for all the replies but i feel like i sold one of my kids and locked them
in a new
hanger in Kissemee, Florida...hasn't sunk in yet.
i have to tell you guys that i was smart enough to take off all coats, sweaters
before the flight South
as N564DF has a super hearter.
Dave was not so sure but about half way to Atlanta with the heat knob just barely
open
and the cabin temp at 80 deg at 7,500ft he started to take his cloths off. good
thing the cabin
is 41" wide but i still had to help him to get undressed.
Not sure this is a first in the Tailwind but maybe a first with same sex pilot
and co-pilot!!
Dave really got to see the utility of the Tailwind first hand as we used every
electrical device
on our way to Florida including the GPS, Loran, DME, HSI, and even the lights and
strobes
on the final leg into Kissemee and his wife was outside and saw us flyby in the
sunset.
Dennis in Chicago
