I want to install new brake lines in N6 PJ. The present set up is
aluminum line from the master cylinders with about a 12 inch nylon
tail at the wheels. I want to renew the nylon tubing primarily
because one of the fittings is cracked and the tubing has been in
service for a long time. First question is which nylon tube is
recommended for brakes, Nylo-Seal or Nylaflow? Are the Poly-flo
fittings (recommended by ACS) the way to go with the nylon tubing?
Concerning the length of the tubing, how much "slack" is added to the
tubing to accommodate gear flexing. Thanks, Jerry

Jerry,
I use the Nyaflow nylon tubing SK 8201-3/16 from Wicks. You need to use the
268 or 269 male connectors or elbows. Also make sure you also use the 2030x4
brass insert.
As far as the amount of slack just make sure it does not pinch the line on
either end when the gear moves.

Jerry I used the Nyloseal tubing with the Polyflow fittings but I had lots
of trouble with the fittings. I ffinally got regular brass fittings with
the nylon ferrals and haven't any more problems. I just left a "little"
slack in mine to allow for movement. Hope this
helps...........................Bob 149

Thanks Malcolm. Do you run Nylaflow all the way from the master
cylinder or do you use aluminum tube for part of system? Jerry

Jerry, Use what Malcolm stated but leave yourself plenty of slack so you can
cut the fitting nuts off later if needed and add new ones. It seems if they
ever leak it will be at the compressed area of tube and fitting nut. Nuts
are available without buying the complete fitting assy. Jim C

Thanks Jim, That is what I am going to do. Have not decided yet
to replace the aluminum tubing. Nothing wrong with it that I know of
but tomorrow I will inspect it very carefully. Jerry

I am not a fan of plastic lines.
Couple of years ago we had an RV-4 that had a brake problem. Why? Because
the plastic line melted.
Why did it melt? The line was a bit too long and rested against the metal
wheel pant bracket. It got hot and melted a hole in the line. Fluid came out
and it was a taildragger.
Fortunately, the brakes got hot from the long taxi at Oshkosh so it was on
the ground when he could no longer steer the plane.
So if you have extra tube length make sure it doesn't touch where it could
get hot.

Ditto for me on that one Cy, I have read of several people having the
same troubles. Didn't someone have a wheel fire because of hot brake
fluid spilling out on a very hot rotor a few years back? Dave

Keep the extra slack at the master cylinder end not the wheel end. Also a
good idea is to slip another short piece of soft plastic tubing over the
brake line in the brake disk area. Jim C

I was told by the local T-18 Guru that a T-18 had a brake fire. The wing had
to be rebuilt from the fire damage. 5606 besides getting sticky also is a
good fire starter.
