Subject: | Update N564DF race #53 Kissemee |
Dave and i worked on the Tailwind last Tuesday thru Thursday in 75 deg temps with
P-51's and AT-6's flying overhead all day long.
Dave has really cleaned up and made improvements to the interior and i am working
on repairing all
the cracks in the urethane finish coats while Dave is practicing flying it with
a really good CFI ( who was flying 727's ) from the Kissimmee area that i would
not hesitate to recommend to anyone needing a 10 hr insurance check out. Airline
pilots normally make me nervous in high performance homebuilts but
i just sat with this guy and watched the whole flight. He even put the Tailwind
thru a series of stalls that i have not done in the 11 yrs i owned it. His comment
after all the airwork.."this is one sweet handling plane with no bad habits."
Dave and i will continue to work on it and next time you see it you will be surprised.
i can't think of a better way to spend a retired afternoon than the last
3 days at Kissimmee.
The photos are of the Tailwind in the new hanger and an RV with Subaru engine just
across the hanger from Dave.
Had to include an auto engine photo for Weav!!
Dennis in Chicago working on Tailwind and building SLA biplane.

Sounds like you're having a good time. Dennis Vest and I were discussing how to
turn a tailwind into a sport pilot plane the other day. A little longer wing,
with perhaps a bit thicker airfoil, build very light--might even cut the tubing
size down where engineeringly feasible, 100-125 hp engine like a rotax or
jabiru with a climb prop. A composit wing might help lose a couple lbs. Also,
might just put on some bigger tires for those rougher grass fields since top
speed is not the issue. Just need to get the stall speed down somewhat and
limit the top speed and viola!

Jim , are the dampeners 3/4" thick or more? Do you plane them to thin
the trailing edge to fit inside the fairing? What is the source of
the fairings which I know you have posted a number of times but I can't
find the reference now. I assume you groove the leading edge for the
brake line. Thanks Jerry

Jim, i have one question also.
i put wood mouldings per RV nose wheel plans on my gear and wraped then in
2" wide fiberglass tape but over the years as the gear flexed i got cracks
in between layers of tape. RV said tape or one piece glass is ok and i
thought tape wound would be better, now i would like to sand the legs and
add a
one piece glass cover.
Could you help by describing the process, wieght of cloth, how you bring the
glass around the trailing edge....etc.

Without the slats and not a fabric wing, single strut, a little more compact like
a tailwind, perhaps retro like the W-8--but somewhat yes.

The wood is the fairing, same thickness as the gearleg area it is glued to.
I used two layers of cloth over the wood and gearlegs and two more on the
ends. Didn't wrap the cloth around the trailing edge. The fairing is shaped
to fit the gear leg and a groove is cut in the forward side for a larger
piece of tubing, it will be glued in when the fairing is fastened on. The
brake line will slide inside the larger plastic tube. This isn't a one day
job, usually about a week if you paint them. Jim C

Bob used PVC fairings, they work OK. I think he has the name and address.
