I am a first time builder in the middle of rib construction. I am not
quite sure of the best way to proceed with mounting the ribs to the
spars, getting correct alignment etc. Does anyone have tips on how to
get everything aligned properly? If there is a misalignment or twist in
the wing can this be corrected during skinning, and if so how? I have
searched the archives and read the T.T. articles on the subject, but
would like some more input before I dive in.
Thanks,
Troy

Troy,
Unfortunately this won't help you much, but Bill Scheunemann makes a wing
kit that comes with cradles for the spars. The front and rear spar sits in two
cradles that were made with a CNC machine to be perfectly level. All we had
to do was put them on a flat table and then drop the spars in them and we had
a perfectly straight wing. Two of us built all the ribs in two days and then
spent two more getting them glued to the spars and ready to skin. Skinning
them took longer than building them...
If someone on the list doesn't have the measurements already, let me know
and I will get the differences in spar heights for level for you...
Good Luck...

Check out issues 12-14 of the Tailwind Times. They are available on Jerry Hey's website (www.j-winddesigns.com). It has some good articles about building the wings.

I bought Tony's books before I started my project. That gave me a good over-all
resource. In one of his books he had a method of using two straight edges laid
across the front and rear spars. One straight edge at the inboard end and
one at the tip end. Looking from the inboard straight edge and sighting the
tip straightedge you could be assured you had no twist. When applying the top
skin is the critical time. With only the bottom skin on the wing will still
twist a little. But once the top skin is on forget it.

Subject: | Tailwind By Sun-n-fun |
It has been our goal since we started this project in September to have it
flying by Sun-n-fun. I will be using it as a Chase Plane for my Airshow
business. C.J. is my Crew Chief and will be the pilot of the Tailwind. You guys
are
right that it is a big undertaking and will take a lot of work. I think if
you look at the plane now it looks more like five years work than five months.
I have been putting in many twelve hour days and have had C.J assisting me
much of the time. For the last few weeks I have had another friend Blake
Prosser assisting. I have also acquired many sponsors who have assisted in several
ways. Bill Scheunemann's wing kit and fuse jigs are incredible. Brian Alley's
carbon parts are high quality. We will also have a Blue Mountain EFIS sport
and autopilot, full vaccuum panel in the right seat by Blue Angle Aviation,
EIS engine system from Grand Rapids Technologies, Three blade constant speed
prop from Whirlwind, 175hp custom IO-320 built by Mike Moore at Avworks racing
engines. And many other cool things.
Hope to see you at Sun-n-fun....

I hope you are successful and timely, and would really like to hear how that engine

Hi All the p.v.c. gear legs are holding up very well on the trike nothing has come
loose yet after two years of butt ugly use .some good landings and some not
so good . a bit of dis coloring on the nose gear leg were some fuel driped on
it. if you want to taper the gear leg cut it any way you like and glue it back
togather . thats what i did on the nose gear leg no taper i cut it down to
3in. from 4in. sanded the inside to a knife edge and glue it back togather with
p.v.c. cement use the clear cement not the purple! works good for me . it was
Jims idea to use this stuff and he was right agian as he usually is . and i
did prime the gear legs with cromemate and use the minamail expanding foam also
. the nose gear strutt cover dont fare in to the wheel pants very well i
put a collar on mine its ok i guess . Bob Danner

I just received a pair of gear leg fairings from
STREAM- LINE FAIRINGS , 2320 Chesley rd. North Port , Fl 34288 phone 941-423-3591
for the Buttercup as suggested by Jim C. They are perfect for the Tailwind
or any other Wittman gear leg . They have large for the main and small
for the nose gear . Price was quite reasonable $ 39.95 a pair ..

Troy, After I built my ribs I temp. installed them on the main spar and the rear
spar, all bunched up together, then I got the main and rear spar parallel with
each other and clamped them down. then I sanded all the ribs together so that
they would be all symmetrical. then I just spread them out to where they were
to go on the spars w/glue. everything appears to be straight so far.

Is your Tailwind really going to have a 540 in it? ; ) Sort of like a Racket?

Yeah Red,
That sounds like a challenge to me. We'll see you guys at SnF. Look for the Pitts,
and the Tailwind on display, with matching paint designs that say SkipStewartAirshows
on them. Just go to where you see the large crowds gathering after
Skip flies his routine at the airshow. :-)
