Back home from vacation and at my computer to thank Marilyn and Red for the hospitality
they showed us in an impromptu visit. We drove up to view the seals and
whales. When the girls had their fill of sightseeing, I got them to agree to
go look at a Tailwind. By now they are used to seeing me looking for Tailwinds.
Red and Marilyn you have a sweet set-up. Living with your plane not to mention
all the other goodies I saw like a speed shop and a variety of big boys toys in
the hangar. It only took about 10 minutes to find you. All I had to do was ask
at the custom car garage on the main drag in town where I would find Red and
his Headers. They knew your location. Ft Bragg is just not that big. I was counting
on that small town thing where everybody knows everybody else. Once I
got to the airport, I saw this big sign for Reds Headers. Easy enough.
Next time I hope to have time to visit all of the Tailwinds there.
Thanks, Eric - Tailwind visitors are welcome in Kalamazoo

We had the pleasure of unexpected visitors last Wed afternoon, Eric Schlanser and
Diane and their two daughters stopped by on their CA vacation. They were on
a very tight schedule but we enjoyed the time spent with them.
What we want to know is, how did Eric know where we were and how to get to the
airstrip?
Any of the TW builders and flyers are always welcome.

I've been working on a problem with my left aileron
binding. the bearing has a noticable spot that drags
right near neutral aileron. I have the flap and
aileron removed and am sure it's the aileron bearing.
Has anyone tried lapping compound on a bearing after
the aileron is built. I used a can of spray carb
cleaner to flush out the gunk but it still binds.
These bearings are built straight off of the plans.

Brian,
i made a 3/4" diameter reamer on an extension that you may be the keeper of
until someone else needs it.
To use it i just removed the linkage in the cabin and removed the offending
aileron then ream the center bearing in the flap.
The reamer is removable and can be used on the end bearings also.

Brian; I used lapping compound on several bearings in the W-10, it really
frees things up, just be sure to flush it out good and oil it when finished.
This is an old time solution from the bigger hammer days. Farmer john

Dennis, The aileron is skinned in aluminum riveted to
the torque tube and would be destroyed if I tried to
take it apart. If I went to that much trouble, I'd
build new and use Jerry Heys bearings. I have a set on
hand for the new airplane.
