--> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Mike Mears" <mike.mears@bbc.co.uk> If you're looking at the garmin 296, consider the avmap 4. It looks the best of the current bunch. The map screen is about twice the size of the Garmin 296 screen for about the same price. Check it out: http://www.avmapnavigation.com/ I saw one yesterday and I was very impressed. [mailto:owner-tailwind-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Bob Conner Subject: RE: Tailwind-List: Lowrance Airmap GPS --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Bob Conner" <bdconner@hotmail.com> I've got an Airmap 100 I bought new less than two years ago. I tried to update the database in it a couple of weeks ago and they told me it was no longer available for that unit. They offered to give me $100.00 tradein on a 500. I told them never mind I would get a Garmin. So that being said I would sell mine for $250.00. I paid $400 for it.................Bob 149 I also told them I would tell everyone how proud I am of their product support.................. From: Ted Strange tedstrange@shaw.ca Subject: Tailwind-List: Lowrance Airmap GPS Have any of you rich dudes got an outdated useable chip for the above unit?. I think my unit will work again if I can get a chip. The pins on mine got all gibbled. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ This e-mail (and any attachments) is confidential and may contain personal views which are not the views of the BBC unless specifically stated. Subject: crack in gear/engine mount
There was a request to see the pictures of the crack in my gear/engine mount that I found last year. I didn't get any pictures of the repair. The pictures show the rear of the mount, and the crack is in the vertical side tube just under the bolt bushing where it bolts through the firewall to the frame, and just above the gear leg socket. The tube was cracked about 1/2 way around on the side against the firewall. Only way to see it was with a mirror on the inside--I noticed the black line which can be seen most clearly in the second picture. The frame was painted light grey, but now is white so any crack will show up even better. The crack was welded and a gusset was welded over the entire area. Dave N168A N202Q

    Subject: rocker arm
There were some posts recently about the elevator control. My W-8s elevator controls were fashioned after the W-10 plans, but the elevator arms had to point down because of the contruction of the vertical stab and lack of space. This required a rocker arm which was positioned under the baggage area. Attached are a couple of construction photos that show the rocker arm and the trim control which is basically the same design as shown in the plans, but connected to the rocker arm, then the control rod is connected to a vernier screw below the pilot's seat. It all works pretty well. The only thing I would do differently today is to put bearing ends at the stick attachment points, rather than the tube bushings as shown on the plans. Dave N202Q N168A
