Subject: Ivo Props and metal props
Wasn't there an article a few years ago in Sport Aviation that compared several props on an RV 4 or 6? They came to the conclusion that the Sensenich metal prop, Designed for the job and not repitched, was the most efficient fixed pitch prop. That said, which was the fastest 160hp aircraft in the AirVenture Cup air race? And what sort of prop was it using? That seems to be a good argument for using an efficient wood prop on a Tailwind to me! Mike Mears. -----Original Message----- From: owner-tailwind-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-tailwind-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Ted Strange Subject: Tailwind-List: Ivo Props and metal props Can I have some pros and cons on an Ivo prop for a C-90? This one was on a 0-290. Might be ok on a C-90 but I won't ever use one again.........Bob 149 They suck! You would be better off with a Kiev or Warp Drive.... Fred Weaver [Mytyweav@earthlink.net] Lots of people won't ever use an Ivo prop again. ...... Red On either a Rotax 912 80 hp or a 912-S 100 hp the IVO outperforms both the Kiev and Warp Drive when mounted in a Sky Ranger. No jive, we have experience with all three. But I am using a McCalley 2 blade metal on my C-90! Doug Koenigsberg ..... Sky Ranger Aircraft Company ...... "A Passion for Sport Flying!" Thank you to all who sent me information. I am not going to use an Ivo prop. Ted Strange [tedstrange@shaw.ca] Has anyone ever used a metal prop ? I would like to try one on my Tailwind . I was thinking of buying one from Van's ? James Fuller That could be interesting....which engine? ...... Fred Weaver [Mytyweav@earthlink.net] Fred, Here is a Sensenich RV prop for a O-360. EBay # 4575713628. Jim My W-8 was certified with a metal prop. I put it back on one time and flew with it, it needs a little more pitch. I think it was a 172 prop that was clipped off and repitched for more speed. I like the wooden one better. .... Bob Conner [bdconner@hotmail.com] I never hear of anyone using a metal prop on any Tailwind ? Mine is a W-10 , 0-320E2D , 150 hp. I think it turns up too high .............3100+ to hit 200mph . .... Jim fuller [jimfllr@yahoo.com] Jim and all.... I have a 3 blade Catto being built that will smooth the pulses a bit and go faster yet. Climb will be good too... No IVO's for me....and no need for a metal two blade. Although, I'd like to see someone try one. They do pretty good for the RV's ..... Weav There have been a number of Tailwinds fly with a metal props, particularly those built in the 70's and 80's. I know of several that had clipped and re-pitched metal props and have friend who modified a number of them for Tailwinds and RV's. For the 150/160hp, modified Cherokee 180 props were popular. However, there is a risk attached. For the Tailwind, I'd think that there are a number of wood or composite props that would provide much better performance and less weight. Jberry ..... Jim Berry [tailwind614@cox.net] I put a repitched metal prop on my first tailwind. It picked up 5 mph. over the wood. But it really effected the weight and balance, an extra 20 lbs or so on the nose. I would never use a metal prop repitched from a cessna or piper etc. again, as there has been some metal props like that, that broke in flight, and then the inbalance can cause the engine mount to break, you lose an engine from the plane, ruins your whole day. Happened to Jerry Coughlin at Baraboo on his Cassutt. Engine stayed on, but He hit wires on landing on a road, and damaged a wing. There has been articles on the problem, and I understand the rules do not allow metal repitched props on formula one racers anymore because of the risk. ..... George........Phx

The Rotary guys are saying that at 180 mph the Warp Drive runs into a wall and won't go any faster, which they say has something to do with the hub area. Just thought I would pass this along, as all us Tailwind guys are hoping to keep up with Red, without using JATO'S. Farmer John Hey Richard - Do you have those wings on yet??

$2800??????????? for what? ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim fuller To: tailwind-list@matronics.com Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2005 6:19 PM Subject: Re: Tailwind-List: Ivo Props Weav, I have no problem spending the bucks to do the job right ( $2800 ) . I just don't want to waste my money or worse yet kill myself ! If I stay with the factory specs I don't see how I can go wrong . I would rather buy Earl Luce's Buttercup , but he won't sell it ! It flys better than any Tailwind I've flown in and it is a lot more comfortable . I don't even mind the slower speed ,it just feels right !
