Good question Jim. The FAA registry info is pretty outdated in many respects. Aircraft
are still registered that have been parked for years. Unless someone actively
cancels or changes the registration, entries stay on the list forever.
It's also hard to know how many Tailwinds there are, since not everyone is listed
as such. There is a lot of variation in the descriptions of the aircraft.

There is an Excel spreadsheet in the "Files" section of the tailwind forum which
is a compilation from the FAA directory made over 4 years ago, which lists most
of the Tailwinds registered at that time. I am sure there are a few missing
because the model or manufacturer fields do not have "Wittman", "Tailwind",
"W-8"or etc. or some variation of those words (including misspellings). There
are almost 300 listed, though it is getting more and more out of date due to
sales, etc. This is just the US. It doesn't even begin to include the Cougars
or those overseas. I just heard of a tailwind the other day that is close
to me, but isn't on the list even though it has been flying for many years. It
didn't have any typical name in the FAA registry that would bring it up as a
Tailwind.
I suspect that there are probably well over 500 tailwinds in the US alone in some
condition, but probably say a quarter of them are in airworthy flying condition.
There are probably over 250 under construction. Again, this wouldn't include
Cougars, Buttercups, or other Tailwind variants.
