Wilson, We took off at night from East Troy, Wisc. in an 0-300 powered C170, an intake valve stuck open and the engine vibrated so badly that you could not read the instruments or maintain altitude. We did a 180 and wheel landed downwind on the runway we took off from..heavy braking with the tail up high. Don't think we could have done that with tricycle gear, on the other hand i have nosed over 3 other taildraggers. Dennis in Chicago "The air is an extremely dangerous, jealous and exacting mistress. Losing one of those huge cylinders is considerably more traumatic than it is on an 0-300. When Wittman designed the W-10, he did so to accomodate the heavier engines. The weight of an 0-300 is not a factor and it doesn't weigh all that much more than an 0-320. It's true that the later crankshaft flanges don't lend themselves to wooden props, but that problem is easily solved. Just ask Jim Clement. His first several Tailwinds were 0-300's and they were very nice airplanes, indeed.
