Dennis in Chicago...blizzard coming
Dennis,
No I did not share this with the group.I didn't know there was a group
till I stumbled on your post and noticed that you were talking about my
famous airplane.Mr.McCaulou and I had talked at length on the phone
about 9052C and he had purchased it from a man in my home state of
Alabama. I commented that it would be back soon. How sad that he and his
friend lost their lives the day before it was to make the journey.I did
buy another TW and still have it.It is a W-8 and looks a lot like the
Red one that Steve Wittman flew.I will enclose a pic of it,And to answer
your Question,I would be proud to let you share the info I sent you with
the rest of the group.
Good luck weathering your blizzard and thank you for honoring me with a
reply!
Best Wishes,
Stan Roberts

I was going thru tailwind archives and noticed you had written about
Steve's 2nd built Tailwind.I Was the one that had purchased that
airplane from a Mr. A.E.McCaulou. He was going to have it flown to me by
a friend of his that flew for United and had aprox 3,000 hrs in
Tailwinds. The word I received was that the determining factor in the
engine loss was water in the gas. The reason they crashed was posible
wind shear causing the plane to sink to fast and the right wing clipped
a tree flipping the plane. both men died inthe accident, the pilot at the
scene and the man I purchased the plane from at the hospital from
burns.A picture of 9052C is attached. Also when Steve Wittman crashed in
Jackson county Alabama in his O to O , the FAA used my tailwind and
plans as a template to figure out what happened. I have part of the
salvage of that plane. It was kept at Pryor field-Decatur/Athens airport.
Best Wishes,
Stan Roberts
