Subject: | Leading edge flaps |
I have been thinking of another way to attach and actuate the leading edge
flaps on my Buttercup wing. I dont like the hinges for a number of
reasons.
I am thinking about simply screwing the top of the backwards "C" to the
main spar and let the bending of the metal act as a hinge. I would then set
up an actuation to make the 1 1/2 inch movement of the nose of the LE. I
would rig it to be propped up under normal flight conditions and nosed down
for landing. I would not drill holes in the spar, but simply connect the
actuator inside the cabin with the flap belcrank.
Obviously it is a major challenge to come up with a light but solid means
of doing this. I have a couple ideas, but they are not clear enough to
even prototype.
I need something that will let me move the bottom of the backwards "D"
about 1 3/4 inches fore and aft. I would like to attach it to all of the "D"
ribs. And be able to get it on and off in some reasonable way.
Maybe that is where Witt got stuck.

Forgot to add,
One of the other motivations is to be able to change the nose profile.
In its extreme, perhaps one nose profile could be drooped for extreme
short field activities. Then for a long range run, a more bullet shaped nose
would give higher speed. They could be switched in an hour or so.
A couple hundred bucks worth of aluminum would let me experiment with
getting a nose I prefered.
Plastic surgery for Buttercup.
No I am not drinking. Just thinkin.
