Sorry to be so repetitive, but again, Performance Aero did not go with the
Sky-Tec, for the very reason you mentioned. The required modification to
the front baffle is much greater.
Call Ron and ask him about it.

Thanks Bob,
I've actually gotten conflicting word on this one--perhaps the other guy
didn't have an O-320 under his cowl. Perhaps I should just post on the Gang
and find out what Les Staples has to say. I'll also give Ron a call as well
and see what he recommends.

Steve,
I have the Sky-Tec (installed at overhaul in Oct 2001) and I think it
does a great job. The only mod necessary is to alter the baffle
material around it. By the way, Fletch has a heavy duty starter
bracket. Cracks in the stock bracket seem to be pretty common.

Every problem I've had so far was a result of bad "shade tree" maintenance
in the past and I'm not about to take anymore chances. It'll be nice to
finally know that the folks looking at my repairs no what they're doing.

the prepurchase or last annual mechanic).

Oh the delimas of a new owner and the "first annual". How often we hear
these same kind of stories.
I did an annual on a Cheetah this spring and to the owners surprise (and
mine) I found a dented in wing spar due to a past accident that nothing had
been ever said about and the plane was just purchased with a new annual
(from the selling dealer)! Furthermore, there was plenty of evidence (a
hugh ughly patch about 3 ft long on the bottom of the wing) to raise
suspecion and the owner never pulled the wingtip off to take a look inside!
Needless to say the wing panel had to be replaced at considerable expense.
There truly is a great deal of sloppy maintenance and no maintenance at all.
Your best insurance is to find the very best and most conscientious mechanic
you can and pay him all the money he wants (if he is truly conscientious it
will be fair), and tell him to maintain the plane like he would if it was
his own.

You won't have to modify the nose bowl on the Cheetah or Tiger but you will
have to modify the front baffling some.

What starter bracket are you referring to? Are you sure it is not the
alternator bracket. There is also a strap off the starter to the alternator
bracket to help support it.

The required modification to the front baffle, regarless of which starter you
select, is a pain in the butt. I installed one of the MagnaFlite starters
just to avoid modifying the baffles and to my surprise, it too required enough
modifying as to negate getting the MagnaFlite over any other starter.
Additionally, since the non-Sky-Tec uses overhuled Bendix units, they want a core
charge and your old starter back. So, you must make a separate trip to return
the old starter just to get your money back.
Stop the agonizing and use a Sky-Tec.

I put a Sky-Tec on an AA1C, no mods to the cowling.

Good choice, It may cost a little more than having it done by a well
meaning A&P, but it'll run a lot stronger and a lot longer. Get it ported=20and
polished and high compression pistons too. Ask Steve (at LyCon) what is
possible.
