No, I don't think you got the wrong muffler. I have never installed a
muffler in 20 years that fit worth a damn. The tooling jig that is used, if
indeed they do use one, is not right. Loosen the bolts that hold the exhaust
risers in place and retighten them after the muffler is installed.
Your next question is, "Doesn't that strain the exhaust risers, possibly
causing them to fail?"
Answer: "Yes, and I've seen more than one fail."
Then your next question might be, "Won't it cause the exhaust gasket to
leak?"
Answer: "Yes, but, it's an approved process so subsituting an experiemental
exhaust system that fits better is illegal." Sorry for the editorial.
The truth is, aircraft quality and FAA approval are not synonomous with
quality, accurate parts that fit well and are safe to use. Approved parts are
approved parts because the supplier had the fortitude to sit through endless
meetings with the FAA and his advisors and patience to wait out the approval
process.
The only serious alternative to the extremely poor quality of FAA/PMA
approved exhaust systems is the Powerflow Exhaust System. Which, oddly enough,
is
alos approved. Expensive, but worth it. The fit is excellent except for the
place where the short S-bend part hits the Carb Air SCAT tubing (on the
Tiger). Can't comment on the Cheetah.

I just had a riser break off clean about 30 hrs after replacing
the muffer. Hopefully I'll have better luck with this one.

I have the phone/address of the company that owns all of the original
exhaust plans and tooling, if anybody wants it.

I've noticed that the Team Grumman email arrives with a lot of control
codes rather than actual text. Any ideas why?

That seems odd. This memssage was in plain text. Can you forward me a
copy directly of a sample of the problem?
Thanks,
Matt

I had a 77 Cheetah, and, as I recall, all the stacks were straight. I've
only seen curved ones on a Tiger.
Gary
PS, Besides, if he had curved stacks, it would be off a lot further than 1/4
inch.

Ah, well, it CAN be powder coated, but it won't be legal.
I had a nose strut powder coated just for shits and grins. I had the powder
coater put a weight (don't recall how much) on the spindle to see if it would
come off. It didn't. I had it powder coated in satin black. I then
tried to chip it with a hammer. Very, Very durable.
Personally, you'll never know the condition of the bond after heating it.
The power coater heated the one I did to 350 F.
On another note. For the same reasons as mentioned above, I painted a nose
fork with PPG Durathane (or Durethane) It's a pure poly-urethane. It was
also every bit as chip resistant. Probably every bit as chip resistant as
powder coating. The last time I saw it, it had been flying for 10 years with
no
serious blemishes.
Between Durethane and Imron, I doubt you'll find anything that protects as
well and lasts as long. Any of the enamels all have the same weakness in that
if you get a chip, the rust will run under the paint for a long way. Enamels
just don't bond as well as Urethanes, either poly or acrylic. Their only
advantage is cost. It's the difference between a $10 pain job and a $60 paint
job. If you ask me, for all the labor required to properly prep the strut
for paint, $50 is a wise investment.
Dupont makes a two part Acrylic-Urethane, Chroma-System, which is a lot
easier to apply than Imron, but it's also 25% more expensive. It's almost=20as
durable as a poly urethane.
Almost time to get ready to go paint the cowling. It's finally cool enough
to paint by midnight. Two coats of OOps Gray Imron. I'm using a
SATA-JET-95 HVLP paint gun. Keep your fingers crossed.
