During the engine teardown that's on-going, the nut was pulled off the accessory case and there was nothing behind the nut. No ball in the sleeve--nothing. Is this proper? How does the engine know when to send oil to the cooler without this, or is it designed to always go to the cooler? My oil temps always seemed to take a while to warm up during run up--could this have been the culprit? This Vernatherm would be in the end of the oil screen housing or vertical, from the bottom, in the oil filter support casting. I believe the Oil Screen is the most common on the O-320, but you could have either... If you don't have a Vernatherm, then you need 69436 SPRING, Oil cooler bypass 62415 PLUNGER, Oil cooler bypass These go below the plug (I think you called it a nut) that has a 5/8 thread and screws down vertically from the top on the rear of the accessory housing... This same hole is also one (of several) take off points for oil to the oil cooler. hope this helps ... gil A PS you definitely need the Lycoming Parts Catalog for this task. It's worth it just for the pictures...: ) I'm quoting from mine that covers the -A and -E models, but a -B models are a 160 HP version of the -A models, and should be almost identical, except for the cylinders (nitrided) and pistons (higher compression).
