You say NUT, what nut? A Vernatherm is located on the back of the engine, on the accessory case, in the housing that is either your Fine Oil Screen or Adapter housing for a remote Oil Filter (ala-ADC, Oil Filter, or remote spin on filter). The Vernatherm has a large Hex Head that should look like a light color of Brass or Aluminum. There is also stampings on the head that give the temperature, 85 Deg C if I recall correctly. Now if this is what you are referring to, the Vernatherm has either a crimped nut or a roll-pin staked nut at the end of a threaded shaft that is about a 8-32 thread. If you have the crimped nut that it is your responsibility to inspect that nut at EVERY oil change. There is an AD against the Vernatherm and crimped nut, the Pin'd nut does not have that AD. If this is the part you are referring to and the nut and seating dome are missing then you are luck that you are doing a tare-down because those parts must be floating around inside the engine. Not a good thing. Can the Vernatherm be rebuilt? YES, but not by you or your A&P. The parts must be replaced with new and there is a special cold height that must be maintained to insure the proper length movement of the hemisphere so it will seat properly against the engine case. The engine case seat should also be checked and honed for proper fit. You can replace the Vernatherm with either the old or new style Vernatherm. Old, of course still keeps the AD requirement of inspection at every oil change. And as you say, your oil temps will take a bit longer to warm up. But the more important part is they will run HIGH because the oil is NOT getting to your oil cooler. Have you found the missing parts? Have you replaced the Vernatherm as yet? Are you interested in an Old style Vernatherm? General Magnaplate. Dollars to donuts they will warp your mount and be two weeks past delivery time on returning it to you.
