Turns out that there was an inline fuse in addition to the CB. The fuse just gave up. It was under the panel and I found it by visually tracing the wiring from the CB to the instrument. I did these tests after I finished the cowling intital evaluation. condition/Alt/OAT/IAS/delta P (pressure drop across cylinders)/TAS .... New cowling tests in parenthesis Idle/2350/108/0/0.375 (0.75)/0; 1800/2350/108/0/0.75 (1.50)/0 Climb out at 100 knots/ ... /103/100/3-3.50 (4.5-5.0)/ ... Straight & Level/4500/94/122/4-4.5 (6.5)/137 (143) Straight & Level/5500/88/119/5.0 (6.5)/136 (144) Straight & Level/6500/84/117/5.0 (6.5)/138 (147) Straight & Level/7500/79/116/4.5 (6.5 - 7.0)/137 (147-153; several different tests) Straight & Level/8500/74/114/4.5 (6.5 -7.0)/140 (145-151; several differnt tests) In general, the new cowling produced up to an additional 2 inches of water pressure drop across the cylinders. The CHTs, surprisingly, were only about 10-20 degrees higher with the original cowling and having less pressre drop across the cylinders. #3 CHT was rarely below 450 below 5500 feet. At 8500 feet, it cooled to 428. The new cowl ran about 415 under similar conditions. The really noticeable result was the wide temperature variations between the four cylinders with the original cowling. With the new cowling, CHTs were withn a few degrees of each other (with the exception of #3). Clearly more work needs to be done to lower CHTs on #3. The differences in TAS can be seen. It was interesting to note that I could NOT turn over redline (2700 rpm) at (or above) 6500 feet with the original cowling. I could run redline to 8500 feet with the new cowling. All things being equal, the new cowling is worth 8-10 knots. When is the AA-5 Cowl going to be ready? If you are getting 7 Kts for an AA-5A&B I would guess you should do the same or even BETTER for the AA-5 (Big Blunt Nose Bowl). I haven't said too much about it but, one person can remove this cowling, left or right half, at a time by simply removing the required screws, holding the cowling by the inlet and where it attached to the fuselage, and taking one step backwards. Getting rid of the nose gear boot will make R&R of the cowling easier too. The biggest and bestest part is a replacement for the metal cowlings which are fatiguing and cracking all over the place. Not to mention, I think it looks a lot more contemporary than the original cowling. The last 4 ... well, I haven't seen them. As for the 2 seaters, ken Blackman was supposedly working on a fiberglas cowling for the two seaters. Not sure if he still is.
