    Subject: Cabin Heat Inlet Removal
--> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: "Steven Jackson" <steven.jackson14@adelphia.net> TG, I've almost gotten everything off the firewall, save the control cables and the cabin heat assembly. I've looked in the maintenance manual and it does not describe how to remove it. The parts manual shows some rivets in there, but after looking at the plane today, I couldn't find any. The only connection I can see to the firewall is one bolt through the muff that connects to the muffler shroud. How do I get this thing off? 1975 AA-1B Steven Jackson N1434R L22 Yucca Valley, CA

In order to take it off, you need to remove the heat plenum in the cabin (held in by rivets) and then hold the bolt from outside=20while bemoving the nut from the inside. A brilliant piece of engineering. What I have done in the past (oh, yea, I removed the one on my Cheetah and had it powder coated) is to strip the cabin heat box and prime and paint it in place. Then mask it and paint the firewall. Gary www.AuCountry.com Home of "Team Grumman" TeamGrumman-List@matronics.com http://www.matronics.com/subscribe

After a nice long run with the engine LEANED you burnt off the Lead and got a smooth run. I had the same experience with an AA-5B that I was fairing except it was the Left Mag. Are you familiar with the Lycoming Lean To Clean procedure? The procedure works EXCEPT I do not care for the idea of doing it AFTER a flight. Think of it this way ... Heat is a LAGGING entity, just like air speed. By the time you see the CHT or Oil read Hot it is PAST HOT, and then doing this AFTER a flight ALL this heat is stored up in the cowled area without any air flow. Parts and things like gaskets become heat saturated. I just don't feel this is a good thing. So, if you want to do this Lycoming Leaning procedure, do it before you depart. That way you can continue to lean during flight and you will have forced air going over the engine and through the cowled area. Also, have you checked the timing? How is your oil temperature? Poor timing will cause it to increase, but from what you mention it does not sound like a timing problem Barry "Chop'd Liver"

    Subject: Baffles. Again
--> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: Aucountry@aol.com I'm replacing the baffle seals on a 93 Tiger with new paint and a brand new Lyoming O360. Not a rebuild. For the last 140 hrs, the owner has been fighting to keep #3 below 460 on his JPI 700. Whoever installed the new engine did a real shoddy job on the baffles. I seriously doubt the baffle seals were even replaced. The baffles were badly corroded and sprayed over with rattle can paint. Plus, the metal baffles don't worth a damn. The seal over the oil cooler was so short and badly worn that it would stay in place and would blow back. So, lets see, install a new engine for $20,000+ and then do a half-ass job of making sure it makes it to TBO. I asked the owner if he wanted the baffles stripped, bead-blasted, chem-film plated, and power coated for an additional $250 over what he was paying for just new seals. Nope. not necessary. So, lets see, We've got a very low time 93 Tiger with new leather interior and 3-color paint scheme, dual 430s, ... (let's just say it's loaded.) and then skimp on making it look good under the hood. That's why I liked building the worlds most perfect Tiger. No short cuts. Gary www.AuCountry.com Home of "Team Grumman" TeamGrumman-List@matronics.com http://www.matronics.com/subscribe
