Subject: | Wing root airflow question |
--> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: ThomasTholmes512@aol.com
Has anyone done any airflow investigation on the wing root area of an AA1?
I've cleaned off the old wing walk material and would like to replace it
w/something less punitive, but still effective at providing non skid and protecting
the paint (new paint!) I'm planning on using the clear or white wing walk
material, and in strips instead of the large section. Any comments?
Secondly, my flaps are depressed down about 1/8", likely from being stepped
on during boarding/deboarding. Any comments before I tackle that?
thx,
Tom

Tom:
When I bought my AA-1 three years ago, I had to remove old painted wingwalk
using a heat-gun. I put on an adhesive wingwalk after painting the wings,
but these came off within a year. What I did this time was buy a quart of
black exterior paint and mix in a baggie of anti-skid. The baggie was
designed for a gallon of paint, so I put the whole thing in a quart and the
consistency worked out perfectly. After masking off and applying four
layers, it looked good. Works even better.

Thanks Brad. Did you think about the airflow over the wing root when you
were laying out the non skid stuff? It may not even be necessary, but I just
don't have any facts to work with.
Tom
I did buy a bag of non skid stuff, but haven't decided how I want to approach
it yet. A foot wide, three foot long non skid "mat" was on it when I
started. It took a heat gun and lots of scraping to get it off. It was clearly
too
big as it went from the flap almost to the leading edge. How much is enough?
Is there an optimal pattern? Or a more optimal pattern?
