I, too, was a little surprised by the request for funding assistance. I read the request and printed a copy. (though I don't know where that is right now) At any rate, I think his request is more than fair. In case you're wondering why I think it's fair... Freedom of speech. The 'other' bulletin board is heavily regulated regarding content. (Though, it appears much less regulated now that there is a little competition. ) On Team Grumman, and the other sites operated by Matt Dralle, the content is completely regulated by the people who use it. I've sent jokes. And, you know what? No heavy handed threats of being kicked off. Early on in the life of Team Grumman, there was a little whining about the way the subject line included the "TeamGrumman-List" leader in the subject. Because I wanted the leader to read "TeamGrumman" there were some snide remarks (to me) about 'only the owner of a newspaper having the real freedom of speech.' or something like that. What the sender didn't understand was that, just by being able to send his complaints and or requests to have a different leader, was evidence of freedom of speech. He chose to unsubscribe; freedom of choice. Ron has his freedom of choice too, as do you all. Matt, are contributions to Matronics-List(s) tax deductible? Where do I send the contribution? I'm on 6 lists, 4 RV and 2 Grumman, and it's always nice to know which list the message is from. The other nioce feature is that the reply automatically goes to the list instead of the sender. Everything lately is 'team this' and 'team-that' so I had no problem with TeamGrumman. Kinda smiled at the 'teamsters' name. The only problem I have with multiple lists is that some folks send duplicates on the other lists too. I'm gonna have to cut back on the number of lists I guess, but right now I'm, learning a lot about RV's. I always tell people about the Fund Raiser when I'm asked to set up a new List. I just went back through the old email messages that Gary and I exchanged regarding the set up and configuration of the new TeamGrumman List, and didn't actually mention the Fund Raiser. Again, I apologize. The Fund Rasier is discussed in the List FAQ that is emailed to all new subscribers ( http://www.matronics.com/FAQ/TeamGrumman-List.htm ). So now that the cat's out of the bag, so to speak, I'll briefly describe what its all about. I've been running aviation-based email lists since about 1990, long before most people even knew what that World Wide Web was! It started with about 30 Van's RV aircraft builders. Over the years, I've added 49 more Lists on specific aircraft types, mostly at the request of owners of the respective types. Running the Lists is a hobby that I do part time. All of the time and resources to support the Lists comes out of my pocket. With the wide variety of lists and services such as the search engine and browsing tools available to List Members, I have always been very keen on maximizing the performance of every aspect of the Lister's experience. That translates to, among other things, a commercial-grade T1 Internet connection and late-model, high-performance systems. Its a fair amount of cash outlay on my part to keep the Lists running and one that I do not have an advertising income budget to offset. From the inception of the Lists, I have had a strict, no-advertising policy on the Lists and associated List web pages. You'll notice that there are no banner ads in the List message or on the web pages. That's a lot of potential income that is lost, but I've always believed that the grass-roots, down-home atmosphere of my Lists that makes the experience a notch or two above all of the other options. In lieu of an advertising budget to pay the bills, I've held a completely voluntary, PBS-like List Fund Raiser each November where I ask List members to consider the List value to them personally and make a small contribution to support the continued operation. The money I receive from the Fund Raiser is generally sufficient to offset the real costs such as the Internet connection and necessary hardware upgrades to keep up with List requirements. I certainly don't want to offend anyone by asking for support during the Fund Raiser. As I mentioned, its completely voluntary. If a Lister finds the entertainment and technical information gleaned from List valuable, I ask that they make a small proportional contribution. In the last few years, I've even started offering some aviation-related gifts for certain contribution amounts to add some fun to the experience. Anyway, I apologize for taking everyone on the TeamGrumman-List off guard with the Fund Raiser this year. I honestly thought I had mentioned this to Gary in the beginning and that he had shared that fact with everyone. To make your non-tax-deductible Contribution to support the Lists, here is a URL that explains the details: http://www.matronics.com/contributions Here is the original post I made regarding the Fund Raiser and what the Contributions go towards: http://www.matronics.com/searching/getmsg_script.cgi?INDEX=656282?KEYS=matt_dralle?LISTNAME=TeamGrumman?HITNUMBER=4?SERIAL=20111323713?SHOWBUTTONS=YES Thank you for your consideration during this time.
