Not a Vet yet, but coming up on 8 years active duty with the Marines so far.
I'd like to take this opportunity to talk about two of our Corps' veterans:
Major Jay "Sweet Pea" Aubin, USMC was a CH-46 pilot who was killed the first
night of Iraqi Freedom when his aircraft crashed on a night mission to
insert British troops near Basra. Jay was a prior-enlisted Marine who got
commissioned and became a pilot. He was married and had two kids. He was a
great pilot--on his way to being a squadron commander someday probably, and
a good friend.
A lot of remembrances of those who've fallen like to talk about what a great
soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine the guy was. Well, Lance Corporal Thomas
Blair, USMC was not a stellar Marine. When he worked for me in Okinawa,
Japan I thought he was just average--he got in trouble, wasn't a real
hardcharger, and sometimes you had to ride him to finish tasks. But, he was
a very good Stinger missile gunner and even though in garrison he wasn't my
best Marine, I would have went to war with him without hesitation. LCpl
Thomas Blair was killed in An Nasariya, Iraq and unfortunately, killed when
an Air Force A-10 strafed a Marine convoy that the aircraft mistook for
Iraqi reinforcements coming to the battle.
So, on this (Nov. 10th) 228th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps,
and on Veterans Day, I'd like to say Happy Birthday to all the Marines and
toast all the Veterans on Team Grumman (and if they'd let me) the Grumman
Gang. So, I personally will be hoisting a beer to the memory of all those
before me, and personally, to the memory of Major Sweet Pea Aubin and LCpl
Thomas Blair.

HH-53s
in the 40th ARRS in Korat, Thailand. Any other Vets out there? I'm sure

Something I've never tried but recently had the opportunity to experience,
How many rpm drop would you expect to see, flying straight and level at 8,000
feet, with full carb heat?
I generally look for 50-100 rpm drop during run up. I saw 150-200 rpm drop
when flying straigh and level. Does that sound about right?

I've just installed another PowerFlow. As before, I like everything it
except the s-bend coming out of the collector (4 into 1). The s-bend needs to
be changed so it doesn't interfere with the carb heat flange. Either that, or
they need to move the carb heat flange (on the collector) up 1/4 inch.
Also, it would take that much to realign the muffler so it was more parallel to
the slip stream. Shorten the muffler brace a couple of inches.

I think that's the right version on the update
I just got the first of the new cowling bottoms. That sounds funny.
The next one will be an inch shallower. You'd have to see what I mean. I
took pictures. I'm also waiting to get the film developed. One of these
days I'm going to get a difgital camera, I promise.
I did get to trial fit the new cowling bottom. I really need a nose gear
boot that is easy to remove and replace. Anybody have a used nose gear boot?

Gary,
I'll be interested to hear of the results. The MT prop blade profile is
a 1930s blade shape. I'm guessing that there will probably be a net
loss of speed, due to the third blade and the old design of the blade.
Keep us up to date as to how the installation goes, and what the
benefits/penalties are. Still, it would look sweet with one of your
Jaguar cowls...

I'm still in the middle of my overhaul/restoration project so I'm without

I got reamed out for posting this on the Gang last year, but an incident in
the field on Sunday reminded me and TG gives me the freedom. If you live in
the SoCal area, please remember to stay the heck away from the R-2501
restricted area north of 29 Palms/Palm Springs. I was sitting on a hill on
the northern edge of the base watching an artillery battalion pound away at
some target hulks with the help of a section of AV8B's carrying MK-82, 500lb
bombs. I just happened to look up and caught sight of a Piper product
(Warrior/Cherokee I think) ignorantly passing east to west, out of the
Bristol MOA and into the R-2501 at an altitude of about 3-4,000 AGL. Being
part of the exercise control group on base, I grabbed my radio and put all
the indirect fire agencies into check-fire as the interloper droned out in
front of all three artillery batteries, and over the target area.
I figure this guy was plodding along heading to Apple Valley or the like. I
couldn't get his N-number or I would have filed a safety violation with the
FAA. If you plan on traveling the area near the R-2501, remember to stay
clear. Also, if you have guys or gals at your local airports who fly around
the area and you hear them talking about Hector or 29 Palms VORs in their
routes remind them. I can't begin to describe what a nightmare this would
be for the Marine Corps if a civilian plane got hit during our exercises
(even though it was his fault). I'm checking out a pair of extra-strength
binoculars as soon as possible so I can read N-numbers and will violate
anyone who comes through. We've already got Harrier, Hornet, and Huey parts
strewn about the range, and can do without civilian parts to accompany them.

No, I didn't. The customer who bought it has been wanting a CS prop for a
long time and now he is excercizing his option to get one. I don't think more
speed is his goal.

Well, mine's certainly junky. I'm replacing it in my bid to fix up my front
